Llangollen Canal

Llangollen canal was once a bustling waterway transporting industrial cargos - today it's still bustling with tourists and boaters alike.

As a testament to its industrial past, it boasts the longest and highest navigable cast iron aqueduct in the world - Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Now attempts are under way to have the aqueduct and its surrounding area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

(Under the proposals the World Heritage site boundary will extend for 11 miles from the Horseshoe Falls near Llangollen through to Chirk Aqueduct, with the jewel being Pontcysyllte Aqueduct itself.)
