Salt and shelter
This week, how a dead livestock collection centre proposal became a burning issue; lip-smackingly tasty road grit; and why not provide a roof for homeless birds?
We speak to local Farmers' Union of Wales Chairman about how a planning inspector appointed by the Welsh Assembly Government upheld an appeal by an Anglesey man to open a dead livestock collection centre on the Gaerwen Industrial Estate.
Anglesey Borough Councillors had refused the application amidst opposition to the plans. The carcases will now be kept in refrigerated containers before being sent for incineration.
This week, two animal charities, The British Horse Society (BHS) and the Animal Health Trust (AHT) are launching a campaign to raise money to fund this research.
The mild weather means there hasn't been much cause for roads to be gritted this winter, but one local authority in Wales is more than ready for the freezing weather when it arrives.
Flintshire is one of the first councils in the country to use a new type of road grit containing molasses. The product, Safecoat, is said to spread the salt more accurately and as less is needed, it's more environmentally friendly.
Now, it's that time of year when our feathered friends are out looking for a new home. Valentine's Day marks the start of National Nest Box Week, the time when the British Trust for Ornithology asks people to spare a thought for homeless birds such as blue tits, house sparrows, and other garden tenants.
We've been out with a nest box estate agent observing some first-time buyers checking out the market and surveying the trees in the Towy Valley.
(This year, National Nest Box Week is bigger and better than ever. Working closely with the BBC, Nest Box Challenge has been launched. This is a nationwide online survey monitoring the success of nest boxes up and down the country.)
