Sport and Religion

Last updated: 04 July 2010

On 'All Things Considered' this week (Sunday 4 July at 8.30am, repeated on Thursday 8 July at 5.30am) Roy Jenkins discusses sport and religion with Manchester United chaplain John Boyers, Andy Marinos Acting Managing Director of South Africa Rugby, Dr Kitrina Douglas, winner of two European Masters women's golf Championships, and Dr Martin Johnes, author of 'A History of Sport in Wales'.

Whether it is Wimbledon or the World Cup, inquests on the limitations of Welsh rugby or anticipation of the Ryder Cup, it's hard to avoid sport at the moment.

How important is sporting success to how a nation feels about itself?

To what extent has professional sport with its stadium-cathedrals, its worship of cult heroes, its liturgy of chants and celebratory songs actually become a substitute religion?

And how are Christian churches relating to all this?
