Roy Jenkins

Call this progress?

On All Things Considered this week (Sunday 18 February at 8.31am, repeated Thursday 22 February at 6.32pm), Roy Jenkins and a panel of guests discuss the United Nations report that put the UK bottom of the list of 21 economically-advanced countries in its provision for children.

They experience, said the study, greater deprivation, have worse relationships with their parents, and face more risks from alcohol, drugs and unsafe sex.

On this week's programme we ask to what extent the experience of being a youngster in Britain changed over the years? And how are churches - experiencing massive decline in the number of young people involved in their activities - adapting to reach a new generation?

Joining Roy to discuss these issues are the best-selling children's author GP Taylor; Dr Heather Payne, a community paediatrician in Caerphilly and expert on child protection issues; Dai Hankey, a youth worker on the St Mellons estate; and Sister Wendy Sanderson, a Church Army officer working as a chaplain to Cardiff's nightclubs.
