New BBC Wales homepage - FAQ

This is the first iteration of the new Wales edition of the UK BBC homepage. It has several advantages - a fresher design, the latest technology, potential to reach a much larger audience and the opportunity for further development in line with the BBC UK Homepage.

The new BBC Wales homepage will continue to be developed using audience feedback, so please let us know what you think of it.

Why build a new BBC Wales homepage?

Like the rest of the UK Nations, most of the work we've done for this update of the bbc.co.uk/wales Homepage has been to move the site to a new, much improved technical architecture in line with the new BBC UK Homepage.

Our audience research told us that users wanted the homepage to serve a wider range of audience interests and do a better job of promoting a greater variety of BBC Online content.

We want to make sure the homepage continues to meet the needs of the users who already come to it every week, while also extending the page's appeal to the many other licence fee payers who come to BBC Online every month.

We're taking note of all feedback received and your comments are useful for us. You can provide us with your feedback via the form provided.

Why have you spent licence fee money on a new homepage when the BBC is facing cutbacks?

By integrating with the new BBC UK Homepage the user experience is more uniform. We can also distribute content more efficiently and as we don't have to support as many technical systems, the new homepage is actually more cost efficient.

How do I switch between the English and Welsh homepages?

Links to the different editions of the Homepage can be found beneath the clock and date at the top of the page. We have tried to make this process as simple as possible as we know users like to visit both UK and Nation sites. You can select which version of the Homepage you'd like to view by clicking on:

  • 'UK' for the English language homepage covering the whole of the UK;
  • 'Wales' for the English language bbc.co.uk/wales Homepage;
  • 'Cymru' for the Welsh language bbc.co.uk/cymru Homepage.

Where can I find the Traffic and Travel information?

You can find the Traffic and Travel site by going to the 'Explore' Drawer in the bottom right of the page and clicking on 'Travel News'. We are looking at how this information can be included on the page in the future.

Where can I find the 'Welsh Word of the Day'?

Unfortunately it has proven difficult to fit Welsh Word of the Day into the new design. You can still get it on the Cymraeg website. We are looking at whether it can be included on the page in the future.

How can I personalise/customise the new bbc.co.uk/wales homepage?

The new homepage provides a customise location option which allows you to tell us where you are by clicking on the place-name in the banner next to the clock. We will then show you the weather forecast, TV and Radio schedules and local news for that location.

To change your location setting, click on the current place-name at the top of the page (next to the clock) and type in Welsh the name of your chosen Weather town, city or postcode.

When I try to set my location on the bbc.co.uk homepage using a county or country (e.g. Wales), it's not recognised. Why?

The homepage uses postcodes and town names rather than county names because the information we supply is specific to a small area. For example, the weather forecast for the east of a county could be quite different from that for the west of the county.

I am in a location outside Wales, why does my homepage default to Cardiff?

The first release of the bbc.co.uk/wales Homepage presumes users are in Wales and has Cardiff as its default setting. This is to ensure we present the correct TV and Radio listings for Wales. If you live in Wales you can change this by clicking on Cardiff and typing your chosen town or postcode into the location setting box. You will then receive your local weather and news.

I've made changes to the new homepage, but when I return it is not the same as I left it. Why?

The homepage uses cookies to store each user's settings. If settings are not stored, it may be because cookies are not enabled on your computer, or that they are automatically deleted at certain intervals for security reasons.
