The Alzheimer's Society Day Centre in Pontllanfraith provides dementia sufferers, and their carers, with the opportunity to meet new friends, have a chat, and enjoy a bit of 'me' time. Shirley and Jerry, after having tried to live with dementia for 18 months,now visit these ' Craft and Company' sessions in Pontllanfraith twice a week. Shirley explains that the visits gives her and her husband the chance to discuss what they have been up to after arriving home. She gets a break from being a carer - knowing that she can leave Jerry in company sure that he will be enjoying himself. The initiative gives her an opportunity to raise with other carers and members of staff issues that are concerning her. She sees the sessions as being a chance for them both to get out of the house and socialize.
