How to be smarter when travelling

During the filming of the TV series 'Changing Lives: Going Green', the Davies family from Holywell picked up lots of tips on how to reduce their carbon footprint. Here are some suggestions for getting from A to B in a more environmentally friendly way.

  • Try to reduce your car usage, especially on shorter journeys
  • Get on your bike; cycling or walking shorter journeys will benefit not only the environment but also boost your health. Look out for unwanted bicycles on free recycling initiative websites such as The Freecycle Network.
  • In certain areas public transport can be reliable and convenient, so try to use it where possible. Also, try to use Park and Ride schemes to avoid taking your vehicle into built-up, busy areas like city centres.
  • If and when the time comes to replace your car, try to choose one that is more fuel efficient that will reduce carbon emissions. This is likely to save you money on both fuel costs and vehicle tax.
  • The daily commute into work is often the most significant contributor to our annual travel. Car sharing is a convenient way of getting to the workplace that benefits the environment and saves on petrol money. Check if there's an existing initiative in your workplace, and if there's not - why not suggest one?
