LISTENING TO MUMMY'S MANDARIN By Hirondelle Chatelard Hirondelle is learning Mandarin as a way of feeling closer to her Chinese heritage. Her main cultural influences have come from Britain where she was brought up and going to a French school because of her French father. She now feels that it is important to connect more with her Chinese roots. Having a Chinese mother meant going on frequent trips to China to visit relatives, but it’s only as and adult that she has a much greater desire to understand Mandarin. Hirondelle has a young daughter herself now and she feels a huge desire to share and pass on her cultural roots to her. |
