Essential info: Newcastle's major and very impressive theatre. Home of many of the biggest productions to hit Tyneside - there's an annual visit by the RSC and Opera North (these sell out months in advance, so it’s worth booking early). In addition there are many touring West End shows and an excellent dance programme.

Essential info: Northern Stage is the largest producing theatre company in the North East of England. The company also present the best of local, national and international theatre. Following a £9 million redevelopment, the company's former home, the Newcastle Playhouse and Gulbenkian Studio, re-opened in August 2006 as Northern Stage. The venue now boasts three performance spaces, two bars and an award-winning new restaurant.

Essential info: The People's Theatre was established in 1911, and has become one of the country's leading amateur theatres. They stage up to 12 productions a year in the theatre's newly refurbished main auditorium and a further three in the smaller studio. Every show is produced entirely by the theatre's own members.

Northern Stage

Essential info: Excellent small theatre with a faultless reputation and a great bar and café. Provides a varied and stimulating theatre programme and particularly encourages new writing. The theatre has been closed for refurbishment but will reopen in autumn 2007

Essential info: The North East's first theatre-in-the-round and a theatre specialising in work for children and young people. Resident company Bruvvers Theatre Company. Seating up to 180 people, around all four sides of the stage, the theatre is home to a variety of drama, children's theatre, comedy, magic, cabaret and dance.

Essential info: A Grade I listed building the theatre has a capacity of 100 up to 1100. It plays host to an assortment of events from opera to theatre shows, comedy and pantomimes.

Essential info: North Tyneside's premier theatre/cinema. The full and varied programme boasts something for everyone, including a selection of Big Band, Swing and Jazz Artistes, top comedians including Ken Dodd, and some of the country's leading children's theatre companies.
