Home of many of the biggest productions to hit Tyneside - there's an annual visit by the RSC and Opera North (these sell out months in advance, so it’s worth booking early). In addition there are many touring West End shows and an excellent dance programme. Northern StageLocation: Barras Bridge, Newcastle Essential info: Northern Stage is the largest producing theatre company in the North East of England. The company also present the best of local, national and international theatre. Following a £9 million redevelopment, the company's former home, the Newcastle Playhouse and Gulbenkian Studio, re-opened in August 2006 as Northern Stage. The venue now boasts three performance spaces, two bars and an award-winning new restaurant. The People's TheatreLocation: Stephenson Road, Heaton, Newcastle Essential info: The People's Theatre was established in 1911, and has become one of the country's leading amateur theatres. They stage up to 12 productions a year in the theatre's newly refurbished main auditorium and a further three in the smaller studio. Every show is produced entirely by the theatre's own members. Live TheatreLocation: Broadchare, Quayside, Newcastle  Northern Stage on Barras Bridge Essential info: Excellent small theatre with a faultless reputation and a great bar and café. Provides a varied and stimulating theatre programme and particularly encourages new writing. The theatre has been closed for refurbishment but will reopen in autumn 2007 The RoundLocation: 34 Lime Street, Ouseburn, Newcastle Essential info: The North East's first theatre-in-the-round and a theatre specialising in work for children and young people. Resident company Bruvvers Theatre Company. Seating up to 180 people, around all four sides of the stage, the theatre is home to a variety of drama, children's theatre, comedy, magic, cabaret and dance. Journal Tyne TheatreLocation: Westgate Road, Newcastle Essential info: A Grade I listed building the theatre has a capacity of 100 up to 1100. It plays host to an assortment of events from opera to theatre shows, comedy and pantomimes. Whitley Bay PlayhouseLocation: Marine Avenue, Whitley Bay  The atrium at The Round Essential info: North Tyneside's premier theatre/cinema. The full and varied programme boasts something for everyone, including a selection of Big Band, Swing and Jazz Artistes, top comedians including Ken Dodd, and some of the country's leading children's theatre companies. The venue also screens films. The Little Theatre GatesheadLocation: Saltwell View, Gateshead (opposite the north-east gate of Saltwell Park) Essential Info: The theatre is home to the Progressive Players who have been in residence since 1943 when the theatre was built. The Customs HouseLocation: Mill Dam, South Shields Essential info: Theatre, cinema and gallery in an historic setting. The annual panto is always a hit. Queen's Hall Arts CentreLocation: Beaumont Street, Hexham Essential info: The arts centre has operated since 1983, holds a 400-seat theatre, two gallery spaces, two classrooms and a café/bar. It's a venue for comedy, dance, theatre, music and film.  The Tyne Theatre on Westgate Road The Phoenix TheatreLocation: Beaconsfield Street , Blyth, Northumberland Essential Info: The Phoenix Theatre presents a mix of professional and amateur work, covering a wide range of art forms, with styles to suit all ages and tastes. Alnwick PlayhouseLocation: Bondgate Without, Alnwick Essential info: As well as hosting professional touring companies and musicians the playhouse also supports local groups and hosts theatre, craft and music societies.
