As with many people locally she’s walked past Grey’s Monument, arranged to meet friends there, walked down Grey Street, used the Monument Metro station and shopped in Monument Mall, but until recently knew nothing about Earl Grey except that he was famous for the tea named after him. Over a cup of … coffee, she shares what she’s learned. More about Earl GreyBorn 13 March 1764 in Falloden, Northumberland. Married to Mary Elizabeth Ponsonby. Had 15 or 16 children by wife (sources differ: www.number10.gov.uk states 16, www.howickhallgardens.org.uk states 15), plus an illegitimate child. Entered Parliament 6 July 1786. Political persuasion: Whig. Known as a great reformer - greatest achievement said to be Reform Act of 1832. Became PM aged 66. Died 17 July 1845 at Howick Hall (which has been owned by the Grey family since 1319) in Northumberland.
