Sensory play is good for all children. By using their different senses, they can start to really understand their world around them. Sensory play helps children develop their imagination and builds confidence as they try new things and become more independent. Sensory toys can be especially good for children who have sensory impairments, like hearing and vision-based disabilities. They provide extra stimulation by helping to build nerve connections in the brain which helps learning development. Sensory toys are also great for children who find it hard to settle themselves to sleep. And they can really help calm and comfort little ones who find it hard to express how they’re feeling. You can have fun making sensory toys together… like moon sand. Mix four cups of plain flour with half a cup of olive oil for a great mouldable sand that feels great to touch, poke and prod. But best not eaten! And it’s not just kids who love a sensory experience, adults do too! Try to take time out and relax with a scented candle, and your favourite music Ahhhh…
Sensory play is a key way children can learn all about the world and how it works.
Sensory stimulation is also great for calming children (and parents) too.
