Read all about it

Photo books are not only great for reliving memories but also serve as fun activity to as a family.

They can be used as learning tool to help your little ones understand what they're seeing and practise their language skills.

Why make a photo book for your baby?

  • You can come back to the photo book time and time again as your child grows, sharing different memories together
  • Going through your photo book will encourage conversation. Chatting through what your child sees will help them learn people's names and the words for the things they do in photographs
  • The more you talk to your little one, the more they will pick up on the words you use

Chatting through scrapbooks with baby

Photo books are a great way to introduce babies to some familiar faces and talk to them about their family.

Try making a photo book that your baby can look at with you. Photos are a great way of introducing children to different faces and talking about who’s in the picture.

A paper book is much more tactile than photos on a phone or device - try printing some of your favourite pictures and sticking them in a book for baby to enjoy. Your baby will love flicking through the pages.

You can have a go at talking to your child about what they see in the photos for example, “Granny is wearing a big shirt” or “Becky is holding a puppy, a puppy says woof-woof!”

Photo books are also a great way of introducing descriptive words. You can describe family members, for example, “Robbie is tall” or “mummy’s hair is long.”

Name the people they can see in the pictures, using their names, for example, “'That's your Auntie Kirsty'.” This will help your baby to learn them.

As you go through the photobook, tune into your child’s interests and talk to them about what they see. If they take an interest in particular pictures, name the people in them and talk about them. For example, you might say: "Mummy is playing in the snow, snow is cold”.
