You needn't be flummoxed by those green fingered experts with our 'Diggin' Dictionary - where we explain in 'simple' terms what all that gardening gobbledygook actually means! | Brassica | Leaf crop | | Canker | Bacterial disease that effects the bark of a tree | | Clematis | Colourful climbing plant. | | Cultivar | A variety of plant that has been produced and maintained through cultivation. | | Ericaceous | Acid based | | Espaliere | A tree or shrub that is trained onto a wall/fence in tiers. | | Green Manure | Annual crop that can be grown then dug in to help enrich the soil ready for new crops. | | Hardy | Will withstand the winter. | | Half Hardy | Requires protection for the winter months. | | Herbaceous | Plants which grow again year after year. | | Loam | A loose soil composed of clay, sand, and organic matter, often highly fertile | | Mattock | A flat-ended pickaxe with a log splitting head for making heavy soils easier to dig amongst its many uses. | | Potage | Garden that is cosmetic but also productive with ornamentals and fruit and vegetable plants growing together. | | Potash | The main chemical that all plants require to flower and fruit. | | Rhizomous | Plants whose root system spreads out underneath the ground | | Root crop | onions, potatoes, parsnips | | Scree | A river of loose gravel or shingle | | Semi-Dwarf | A fruit that normally grows tall but is grafted onto a slower growing root stock. | | Sempervivum | A succulent, rossette shaped alpine plant that is commonly known as a House Leek | | Variegated | Different colors on the same leaf, or flower. | | Winter Rock | A problem caused by the compaction of the soil at the base of trees and shrubs forcing the soil to hold water around the crown of the plant slowly rotting the stump causing the plant to collapse |
