| | The Cardington airship hangars dominate the north Bedfordshire skyline. Built in the 1920s, they are still in use - one as a fire research centre and the other to develop airships. |

| Andrew Bird., Bedford | Wednesday, 14-Apr-2004 16:17:14 BST | | | The Both of Cardingtons Airship Sheds should always be looked after. They are not just part of Bedfordshire History they are part of England and the rest of the United Kingdoms History. If they are allowed to become no more than another housing estate it will be a loss to the entire world. If no one can think of a sensible use for them then it's time for new leadership to be incharge of them. They have been filming the next Batman Movie there over the last few months and other films should be made there. It's a good distance from local houses and people who might be disturbed by loud music so using the entire site for music events would be both good for the site and local business's which could do the other related business's. What about have car shows, business exibitions and other such events held here. There is a hotel within easy reach of RAF Cardington. These are a few ideas all we need is someone with the vision to make it work! | Rick Zitarosa, Point Pleasant, NJ U.S.A. | Saturday, 30-Aug-2003 13:35:43 BST | | | The severe decay of Cardington Shed #1 is a warning that without proper maintenance, these big sheds (the only ones this size in Western Europe) won't last forever. Anything that can be done to secure the funding to stabilize and then preserve important structures would be an investment in future generations being able to utilize and admire them, and guarantee a continued British participation in the increasingly-probable renaissance of large airships, which the county has contributed a lot to in recent years. |
| trevor monk, cardington | Saturday, 16-Aug-2003 13:16:32 BST | | | Number one shed should definatley be saved, there a hole range of money makeing uses for the sheds, from film studios, concert arenas and especially for their intended use, airships, the company currently making ships there is ATG that is their ship you can see in the 360 deg shot. their are no hangars this size in the uk and in europe the only other contender is cargolifter with their shed which is a lot larger than cardington, but unfortunately cargolifter has gone belly up and the shed is to be turned into an jungle inviroment. like the eden project in cornwall but larger. it is a terrible shame that the rest of the workshops at cardington were destroid, this was the last remaining intact WW1 airship station left intact in the world and now instead of a compleate site we are left with the hangars and the admin building the workshops were unique but now have been leveled for housing, which is a shame. |
| Mr JR (Dick) Thompson, Podington | Tuesday, 22-Jul-2003 18:56:09 BST | | | There is a good case to spend considerable sums on all of the "candidates" But I feel that No.1 Hangar should be fully restored as it still has the potential to be used as a hangar or an auditorium.I can remember as a child on "Battle of Britain Day" being strapped into a small parachute harness under a barrage balloon and rising up into the roof. I also remember that there was a very large pile of boxes which my stepfather (who was a civilian electrician at Cardington) told me contained brand new RR Merlin engines. |
