Treasure Quest: 27th January

An unsusal Treasure Quest with a uniquely slow start; never assume we'll begin in a big town or city!

Clue 1: A 60s new town but not on the Mersey.

More "listener clues" coming right from leftfield, as this week's Quest got off to a standing start. Eventually the contestants made the brave decision not to journey to Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell or Woolstone as listeners suggested. Instead we travelled up the A509 to the tiny hamlet of Warrington (nothing to do with the 60s new town near Liverpool!).

Warrington

As listener Jenny said on the email: "Warrington's only got about 12 houses." Yes, but that doesn't mean it's not the right location!

Clue 2: A particularly appropriate place to rinse the radiocar.

A real toughie. Listener clue writer Pete Kinsey from Wigston, south of Leicester, forced all concerned to furrow their brows. Most listeners correctly identified the theme of a car wash, but where? If the car's sent to Warrington in Buckinghamshire... then perhaps there's one there?

The Three Counties Petrol Station

Joy! There is! And it's at the Three Counties petrol station! What an appropriate place to wash the Treasure Quest radiocar.

Clue 3: Nod your own way to victory, though New York may be ambitious.

Now it's getting easier. This location was an oldie, having featured on the show before. Cookie remembered the way to the Paula Radcliffe Sharnbrook Community Sports Centre, and we're off and running! (If you'll pardon the pun...)

Clue 4: Hey Cookie! Don’t be afraid. You’ve been made to go out and get it.

Less than an hour to go! After a slow start the pace had started to quicken. But now this perculiar clue. It's telling Cookie what she already knows, isn't it? But wait... try singing it as a tune. Lorraine the listener was bang on: this is a send-up of the Beatles Hey Jude.

The Oakley Arms

Other listeners soon came to the fore, and sent the Questers off the the village of Harrold on the Beds/Bucks border. Evidently Paul McCartney popped in around 1968 for a pint at the Oakley Arms and a sing-song. Altogether everyone: "Nah, nah, nah, na-na-na-nah! Hey Cookie!"

Clue 5: Allusive Gemma, bistro extraordinaire.

After a dismal performance last week, Treasure Quest's reliable anagram crackers were back in action and firing on all cylinders. "Allusive Gemma," sent Cookie to Emmaus Village in Carlton, a sanctuary for homeless individuals. Their bistro is famous locally, though there may be no chef called Gemma.

Clue 6: Both busy today, under same roof, same cloth.

Less than ten minutes to go! The treasure was in sight. But the contestants were in a quandry, confused by listeners instructions covering everything from Odell Church to Holocaust Memorial day. Eventually they plumped for Turvey Abbey, where religious monks and nuns of the same order live together under one roof. Conscious of the day of worship, Cookie accosted a nun and bellowed, "do you have the treasure?!?!?" Fortunately, Sister Zoe did. Cue wild celebration both in Turvey and back in Luton, as the Treasure is sourced with only seconds to spare. Phew!
