Police spokesman Des Lawless has talked about the mood amongst colleagues following the death of a police officer in a stabbing incident in Luton Town centre. ![]() PC Jon Henry Pc Jonathan Charles Henry, 36, who had served three years in the force, is believed to have received a fatal wound after he intervened in an incident outside the Marks and Spencers store in George Street at 7.18am on Monday morning (11 June 2007). It has been confirmed that he was wearing a stab vest. Pc Henry leaves a wife and baby daughter and Mr Lawless said that it was a very difficult time for the officer's family and colleagues. "It's very very said that we've lost a police officer today and our hearts go out to his wife and family" he said. "It's a sad day for Luton. ![]() Paying their respects.. "I don't remember a police officer dying in these circumstances during my service and I have been here for more than 40 years" he added. "The mood [at the police station] was extremely sombre and there was a lot of very sad police officers because they know they face this kind of danger on a daily basis but they just hope through all their career that it never ever happens. "It's happened today and they have to come to terms with that reality." Much of Luton town centre has been cordoned off while police investigate the incident. A 53-year-old man is also seriously injured but in a stable condition in Luton and Dunstable hospital, and a third man is also being cared for there. Chief Superintendent Nicky Dahl, Divisional Commander for Luton spoke of his reaction to events. "It's terribly shocking for me" he said. ![]() Floral tributes outside Luton Town Hall "I can honestly say it's the worst feeling in my life, actually receiving the news and then having to tell his colleagues that he'd died." He also said that he's been overwhelmed by the public's reaction. "Everyone's devastated around the station" he said. "We've been receiving letters of support from all across the country. In fact when I walked down to the town centre it's amazed me how much support we've actually got, it's really been very heartwarming to receive the sympathies from the members of the public that we've had." For all who want to pay their respects, a Book of Condolence is being opened at Luton Town Hall. A man has been charged and is in police custody.
