Championship Luton Town 4-1 Crewe Alexandra Euan Duncan reports Crisis - what crisis? Luton responded in style to their recent critics ending a four match losing sequence with a workmanlike 4-1 victory with a side depleted by injury, illness and suspension. Strikers Rowan Vine and Enoch Showumni made the most of being given a place in the starting line up, although a goalless first half did little to suggest what would follow. | | Euan Duncan reports. |
Vine bagged a brace in the space of four second half minutes, the second a penalty after he was fouled by Crewe defender Stephen Foster, who was sent off - effectively preventing a fight back by the Cheshire side. Substitute Dean Morgan headed the third at the second attempt nine minutes from the end and then Showumni deservedly netted two minutes from time, tucking in a cross from Vine. In between, Crewe's consolation came by the head of defender Richard Walker from a free kick. But this was the Luton we know and love - twenty goal attempts in the second half - four found the target. The Hatters will hope they've got the losing streak well and truly out of their system. The winning run ended, but this felt like a victory as ten man Watford came from behind to certainly deserve their point. They played virtually all the second half with ten players, after centre half Clarke Carlisle was sent off for a second offence, the first yellow somewhat harshly for diving. Watford had taken a tenth minute lead as Marlon King converted a free kick, but Leicester gradually gained the upper hand and Gudjonsson netted an equaliser, cue a Watford collapse and when Matthew Spring handled, Gudjonsson netted a penalty and the Hornets were happy to trail only 2-1 at the break. But after Carlisle's dismissal, the visitors got their act together and after Dion Dublin missed a great chance to seal the game, Mackay tapped in to make it 2-2 after Ashley Young headed Gavin Mahon's late cross back across goal. Leicester: Douglas, Stearman, McCarthy, Gerrbrand, Maybury, Sylla (Hughes 73), Gudjonsson, Kisnorbo, Smith (Tiatto 84), de Vries (Dublin 76), Hammond. Subs Not Used: Hume, Hamill. Booked: Smith. Goals: Gudjonsson 38, 45 pen. Watford: Foster, Doyley, Carlisle, Mackay, Chambers, Devlin (DeMerit 54), Mahon, Spring, McNamee (Bangura 53), King, Young. Subs Not Used: Chamberlain, Stewart, Grant. Danny Wilson's side took the lead nine minutes in, Nicky Rizzo delivering a good free kick into the heart of the box and Will Brown unmarked headed past Tynan in the Bee's goal. Wade Small scored the Don's second six minutes before the break, Nathan Koo-boothe with a great through ball to Nicky Rizzo, his square ball found Small who scored into an empty net. Barnet started the second half better, forcing a good save from David Martin on seventy minutes from a Nick Bailey strike, but the visitors sealed it three minutes from time. Wilbraham latched onto a poor clearance pass to Stephen Quinn who unselfishly put Smith in to make it three nil and job done. Att: 991 Ref: I Williamson (Berkshire). Gillingham 2-2 Wycombe Wanderers Wycombe win 3-1 on penalties Ian stringer reports. Some much needed excitement was brought to the LDV Vans Trophy, with one hundred and twenty minutes of evenly fought football with League Two Wycombe performing well against a Gillingham side who battled very hard and showed John Gorman's men what they should expect if they get promoted. The Wanderers found themselves two down in the first half after Gillingham broke away twice for midfielder Matthew Jarvis to put his side ahead, and they looked like they were going to run away with it but the man of the moment Charlie Griffin pulled two back. His first was a close range effort and his second a penalty after Matt Bloomfield was fouled in the area. That gave Griffin a bit of practice from the spot and he needed it - one hundred and twenty minutes not enough to separate the sides. The Gills hardly put on a penalty masterclass only scoring one from their four, Wycombe on the other hand scored four from five and now progress to round three. Gillingham: Bullock, Clohessy (Corneille 104), Cox, Johnson, Williams, Spiller (Jackman 90), Smith, Crofts, Jarvis, Harris (Shields 74), Byfield. Subs Not Used: Brown, Saunders. Booked: Byfield, Smith. Goals: Jarvis 23, 27. Wycombe: Turner, Senda, Johnson, Williamson, Martin (Easton 75), Betsy, Burnell (Philo 90), Torres (Anya 75), Bloomfield, Dixon, Griffin. Subs Not Used: Williams, Keogh. Booked: Torres. Goals: Griffin 39, 42 pen. Wycombe win 3-1 on penalties. Att: 2,111. Ref: M Thorpe (Suffolk). |
