    Football: 19 November 2005

All the news from the matches involving Luton, Watford, MK Dons, Wycombe and Stevenage.

    Championship

    Norwich City 2-0 Luton Town

Four straight defeats and events in stoppage time mean that there will be further repercussions than just losing.

Russ Perrett was red-carded later on for a second bookable offence and will so miss Tuesdays home game with Crewe, but so too will skipper Kevin Nicholls red carded after the final whistle for, according to the referee, gesturing to the Norwich crowd.

    Simon Oxley reports.

Luton manager Mike Newell commented after that Nicholls was gesturing at Dixon Etuhu who had allegedly spat at him. The Hatters will appeal with Nicholls facing a three match ban.

Newell says that they aren't panicking, but they are going to have to halt this losing run before getting into the busy December schedule. Loan signings are defiantly on the cards ahead of the transfer window.

For the record, first half goals were provided by Hughes and Huckerby which accounted for that 2-0 scoreline with Luton once again not able to turn possession into goals.

Big test on Tuesday against Crewe, let's be having you!!!

After the match Luton manager Mike Newell was upset about the Kevin Nicholls sending off.

"The referee said he made a gesture at the Norwich fans, but Kevin maintains that it was at Etuhu."

"The problem was at the last corner Etuhu spat in his face, I think Kevin might well have made a gesture, which I can't condone but I think he has done quite well to restrain himself."

"If somebody spits in my face I wouldn't be responsible for my actions lets put it that way."

    Watford 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Watford rode their luck, but you can't argue with five successive victories which have earmarked the Hornets as serious promotion contenders.

    Euan Duncan reports

Watford scored twice in eight first half minutes through defender Carlisle from a free kick, and the second being tucked in from close range by King after a dreadful blunder by Wednesday on loan keeper, Nicky Weaver, who spilled a routine cross.

Watford returned the compliment in stoppage time when Ben Foster allowed a rising Glenn Whelan drive to slip through his fingers and they nearly threw away two points as Lee Peacock guided a last gasp header the wrong side of a post for Wednesday.

They do say though that 'fortune favours the brave' and the Hornets gave another committed display which was enough...just.

After the match Adrian Boothroyd was disappointed to concede a late goal.

"It is a horrible score two-nil, it is one of those scores where you can get complacent and obviously the opposition that are two-nil down find it easy to play as there is no pressure and you are expected to lose."

"I'm disappointed with some of the aspects of the play today but we'll take the win."

    League One

    MK Dons 2-1 Walsall

A really important win for the Dons and when the final whistle blew at the National Hockey Stadium the positive reaction from the 5,000 MK fans said it all.

It was a cracking start for the home side. McClenahan delivered a great cross from the right hand side, Mcleod strode through the Walsall defence to meet the ball with his head and score past Murphy.

The equaliser came eight minutes later, Leitao was allowed to run at the Dons defence and his square ball found Scorer who lived up to his name getting past McClenahan to make it one all.

The second half was a very even affair, Walsall having the better chances, Matt Baker forced into a double save early on and another fine save ten minutes later when Leitao was one on one with Baker.

The Dons won the game eight minutes from time, an Edds 30 yard free kick was parried by Murphy and substitute Wilbraham poked it home to make it 2-1.

The only negative of the game was McLeod picking up a knock midway through the first half, time will tell how bad that injury is.

Three points, and three wins in a row

After the match Danny Wilson was pleased with the teams performance.

"It was a big game for us today, particularly after the week we've had, but we came away with a terrific performance."

"We were under a bit of pressure second half but we dealt with it well, so there we have three points and it is great to have three points.

    League Two

    Wycombe Wanderers 3-1 Grimsby Town

They say in the face of adversity a teams true colours are shown, and that was certainly the way of it for Wycombe Wanderers.

Yes, the unbeaten run continues, yes they proved they can perform at home, but the biggest positive from this one was that they did it without key players.

John Gorman confirmed that he was down to the bare 16 before the match, but his side scored from defence, midfield and strike force.

A fairytale debut for Charlie Griffin who has missed most of the season with a nasty head injury. He was made a father two weeks ago and bagged the first goal of the afternoon, volleying from eight yards.

The Chair Boys went 2-0 up 15 minutes later when Matt Bloomfield got his second of the campaign.

Grimsby, pulled one back before half time, but the Wanderers secured all three when centre half, Roger Johnson, headed a Senda free kick past keeper Steve Mildenhall in the second period.

So they are unbeaten in 18 and top of League Two, there seems to be a belief around here at the moment.

After the match the Wycombe manger John Gorman was pleased to keep the unbeaten run going.

"It was a great home win, we needed the win today, we needed a home win because lately we've had some draws and lost in the cup."

"We weren't happy about that but we've produced a fantastic performance today when we needed it."

    Conference

    Scarborough 1-1 Stevenage Borough

Prolific striker Anthony Elding earned high-flying Stevenage a 1-1 draw with struggling Scarborough at the McCain Stadium.

Defender Kevin Nicholson had put Boro on course for their second successive win when he headed home a minute before half-time, but Elding struck his eighth goal of the campaign in the 74th minute to ensure a share of the spoils.

Scarborough, buoyed by their 1-0 win at Tamworth last week, came close to taking a fourth-minute lead but Stevenage goalkeeper Alan Julian did well to tip Tony Hackworth's shot over the bar.

Michael Brough then forced a good save out of Boro keeper Leigh Walker, who also pushed George Boyd's piledriver over. Nicholson and Elding traded goals before Walker saved well to deny Darryn Stamp a winner for the visitors.

After the match the Stevenage manager Graham Westley wasn't pleased with his sides performance.

"We're going to look at it as two points dropped rather than one gained albeit from one-nil down away from home."

"There will be those that think a point is good but it was disappointing on the whole we weren't at our best this afternoon."

J Pyper - Luton Town FC
If you wanted things to go wrong, they certainly did for Luton Town on Saturday. We had the better of the second half, but didn't take our chances. But the last few minutes of the game with Perrett being given his marching orders and what happened after the whistle with Nicholls, I hope doesn't affect the team performances and confidence. IT'S NOW TIME LUTON TOWN FC BOARD TO ASSIST MIKE NEWELL, AND GIVE HIM THE FUNDS TO PAY IN TWO OR THREE NEW PLAYERS (JAN TRANSFER WINDOW)OR GET LOANS IN BEFORE THE BUSY DECEMBER PERIOD. UP THE HATTERS !!

Once again GW fails to give Scarborough any credit for playing them off the park. You were lucky to get a point, you certainly did not derserve it
