Championship Hull City 1-2 Watford By his own admission Adrian Boothroyd's side didn't play well, particularly in the second half. But for the fourth game in a row, they collected all three points and find themselves four points clear in third place in the Championship. They deserved their half time lead as they came from behind after conceding a sixth minute opener to Nick Barmby and were level just a minute later as Gavin Mahon headed in Young's corner. Matthew Spring made it 2-1 just before the break. | | Simon Oxley reports. |
But Hull boss Peter Taylor rang the changes and Watford lost their way, ultimately indebted to keeper Foster once again who made two key saves and watched as Stewart Green blasted his penalty over the bar. Still, the Hornets must be doing something right: 32 points from 18 games going into the international break, what will happen when they play well? Adrian Boothroyd had this to say after the match: "I'm not particularly happy about today's performance, I thought we were very very average, we weren't proactive in our play and we ended up just waiting for them to give us a punch and then we punched back and in the end we were hanging on." Goals Hull: Barmby 6. Watford: Mahon 8, Spring 44. Hull: Myhill, Lynch (France 71), Cort, Collins, Delaney, Green, Woodhouse, Welsh, Ellison (Fagan 45), Brown (Burgess 45), Barmby. Luton Town 2-3 Burnley Injuries continue to take their toll on Luton's progress in the Championship, as a weakened side couldn't break down ten-men Burnley in the second half. Despite capitalising immediately after Clarets' keeper, Brian Jensen was dismissed for handling outside his penalty area five minutes before the break. Burnley had no substitute keeper, so midfielder John Spicer took over between the posts and within a couple of minutes Steve Howard headed a corner past him on his 200th appearance for the Hatters. | | Euan Duncan reports. |
Luton were playing catch-up by then, already, after two Adi Akinbiyi goals, on the break, had left the Hatters with a mountain to climb. The red card offered Luton a lifeline back into the game, but it slipped through their grasp when Leon Barnett fouled Akinbiyi in the penalty area, and the striker completed his hat-trick with the spot-kick. Warren Feeney added a second for the Hatters from another corner, but they barely threatened an equaliser as Burnley shut up shop. At least the international break offers the chance for Luton to get some players fit, and although the Hatters remain in fourth, they need to quickly restore the winning habit. Mike Newell had this to say after the match: "It was a frustrating day for us as we haven't been able to take advantage of them losing there keeper and not having a substitute keeper. "We huffed and puffed but we haven't produced what we needed to produce." Goals Luton: Howard 43, Feeney 60. Burnley: Akinbiyi 15, 31, 54 pen. Luton: Beresford, Foley, Perrett, Underwood, Edwards, Barnett, Holmes, Morgan (Showunmi 73), Heikkinen, Howard, Feeney (Vine 71). Subs Not Used: Keane, Brill, Brkovic. Booked: Barnett. Burnley: Jensen, McGreal, Sinclair, Harley, Hyde, Courtney, Elliott (Lowe 78), Garreth O'Connor (Noel-Williams 45), Spicer, James O'Connor, Akinbiyi. Subs Not Used: Karbassiyoon, Dyer, McCann.
