    Football: 1st November 2005

It's tight at the top as Luton and Watford jostle for lofty positions in the Championship.

    Sheffield United 4-0 Luton Town

    Simon Oxley reports.

Four nil, a little harsh on injury hit Luton, but it was a lesson in finishing from a side who seem destined to be in the Premiership next season.

Gradually Jagielka and Montgomery got the better of Holmes and Heikkinen in the makeshift Hatters midfield with Nicholls and Robinson both absent and with Sol Davis still missing.

A reshuffled defence saw Leon Barnett make only his second start and Paul Underwood make an early return from inury. The patched-up nature of the side told in the end, although Barnet impressed and restricted the prolific Steve Kabba to next to nothing - trouble was there were others to step in with Jagielka before the break, Morgan, Pericard and Jagielka again netting for the Blades.

Luton had plenty of possession but clear cut chances were at a premium, something for Mike Newell to ponder as the transfer window nears - Neil Warnock has no such worries.

    Watford 3-1 QPR

Watford deserved their second home win in four days as they eased past a Queens Park Rangers side which had one good spell early in the second half.

Matthew Spring put the Hornets ahead with a diving header six minutes before the interval and the lead was doubled twenty minutes from the end when Anthony McNamee drove in from close range after being set up by Spring.

The points were sealed thirteen minutes from time when Ashley Young curled a free kick inside the far post for his tenth of the season. Danny Shittu's stoppage time header from a Rangers corner was merely a consolation. Had Ben Foster not denied Dean Sturridge in a in a one on one shortly before the hour it might have been a different story, but the Hornets rode their luck and made Rangers pay.

Watford: Foster, Doyley, Carlisle, DeMerit, Chambers, Devlin, Mahon, Spring (Bangura 83), McNamee, King, Young.
Subs Not Used: Chamberlain, Stewart, Mackay, Henderson.

    Goals: Spring 39, McNamee 70, Young 76.

For the first time this season, we have to hold our hands up and admit that we were beaten by the better side. I also felt that the 4-0 score was a bit flaterring, concidering the changes and players being forced to play who wrer not fully fut. We will 'Bounce back' just like we have in the last 2 and half seasons. Up the Hatters !!

Even if I wasn't a Watford fan, Boothroyd surely would win manager of the season so far. His first full managerial position, with limited funds, a young squad and an air of scepticism at the start of the season. What the team has achieved is truly inspirational stuff!
