BBC Three Counties Wycombe Wanderers reporter Ian Stringer decided, with the permission of the club of course, to follow the team for an entire away trip to find out exactly what happens, how they create the team spirit that everyone talks about and why they have such a good away record. | | Ian waits to train with Wycombe |
From the team bus to Nottingham Forest's training ground, the hotel, team briefing and the match itself, Ian was granted exclusive access to the team. He even did a training session which surprised boss John Gorman, although Ian admitted that he did have a few reservations about joining this workout, but they were worries that were soon put aside! "I have to be honest, I was scared of breaking a team member's leg" he explained. "But when I was asked to take part in a training session with a football League squad during an away trip I couldn't get my extra large Wycombe Wanderers training top on quick enough! "The weekend was exhilarating at the same time as being an education" he continued. "I did everything with the side for their trip to Lincoln, from the coach to the training session, you name it, I was there, microphone in hand." | | Sergio Torres limbers up |
Ian told us that the weekend was very revealing. "It was very interesting as I did not expect a League Two club to be as organised and regimented as it was" he said. "It was fascinating because I wasn't aware of all the detail involved in planning an away trip. And it was also interesting seeing how they build that famous team spirit. "I still find it hard to believe how much organisation is required for a team of footballers" he continued. "Stupidly I thought we would be eating from the hotel menu, but boy was I wrong! The dietician had already sent the team's 'nutritional requirements' up a week earlier and he isn't in to steak and chips..........shame! "But the biggest learning experience for me was how little the players have to do, and rightly so - 'The Game' is all they are interested in" he added. | | Getting a massage |
"I am sure they don't want to worry about ordering the correct amount of carbohydrates or what time the morning walk is. They turn up when their itinerary tells them to but perform on the pitch like a side on a mission." Ian also revealed that there was always one worry in the back of his mind, and that was the feeling that he might be some kind of bad luck talisman! "They were unbeaten in a club record of 14 League games, they were facing a struggling side and John Gorman's men are well known for travelling well, so pardon me for not wanting to be the bad luck charm" Ian explained. "A massive thank you therefore has to go to defender Mike Williamson who scored the two vital goals (one in injury time) to earn the side all three points and guarantee me a place on the bus on the way home. It's a long way to walk from Lincoln you know!" | | Breakfast - the best meal of the day! |
A weekend with the Chairboys also highlighted that there is just one main thing that brings them together. "They respect the manager so much that working together for him as a collective, brings them together even more" revealed Ian. "And creates the team spirit that has got them to where they are in the League."
