Watford were well beaten in extra time but there was no question that the score line flattered Wigan. It was true that they dominated the first half with Watford unable to even muster a goal attempt, but keeper Alec Chamberlain was equal to the Latics best efforts. | | Euan Duncan reports. |
As was his opposite number Mike Pollitt when the Hornets eventually pressed forward in the second half, Anthony McNamee and Joel Grant were both denied in quick succession. After 90 minutes the match ended with a stalemate and as penalties loomed the tide turned as a harsh penalty decision went against Watford when Andreas Johansson tumbled under the feet of Jay DeMerit. Ryan Taylor tucked away the spot kick and Watford were left deflated and Johansson added insult to injury by scoring twice in the last four minutes to give Wigan a margin of victory that they scarcely deserved. The Latics goe through to round four while the Hornets are left to nurse tired legs and plenty of bumps and bruises. After the match 41-year-old Watford keeper Alec Chamberlain was disappointed with the result. "I think the second half of extra time obviously we went for broke really and unfortunately they scored two more goals." "I think if we had lost the game 1-0 we still would have been hard done by with the penalty but it really rubbed salt into the wounds those last two goals."
