    Football: 22 October 2005

All the news from the weekend matches involving Luton, Watford, MK Dons, Wycombe and Stevenage.

    Championship

    Ipswich Town 0-1 Watford

Back to winning ways and deservedly so, Ipswich were awful, but credit to Watford who produced an excellent away performance.

The only criticism was that they didn't win by more. Watford were threatened by set pieces in the first half, Ipswich barely at all.

The breakthrough came at half time as Marlon King switched to a left sided position, he headed Paul Devlin's back-post cross goalwards. Lewis Price saved only to let Ashley Young score the rebound.

A ninth of the season for Young, and it should have been many here. Darius Henderson came close twice to extending the lead and Jay Demerit had a header disallowed.

We waited for the Ipswich fight back, it never came and the visiting fans found their £27 well spent, not that the result justifies a seat in the corner.

After the match Adrian Boothroyd was delighted with his teams performance.

"I thought it was a very professional performance today, we took all the steam out of Ipswich."

    Goals

    Watford: Young 55.

    Att: 24,069 Ref: A D'Urso (Essex).

    Luton Town 1-1 Plymouth Argyle

Luton dug deep to break down a dogged Plymouth defence, and looked to have done enough as the game drew to its conclusion.

But their Devon opponents had other ideas and salvaged a point with their only worthwhile attack of the second half.

Hatters' striker Warren Feeney, who missed an open goal in the first half, put Luton in front, shortly after the hour, heading in a Carlos Edwards cross.

Feeney almost teed up Steve Howard for a second, before two of Argyle's substitutes, Matt Derbyshire and Bojan Djordjic combined to level the scores, as the game entered stoppage time.

Derbyshire's right wing cross was headed in by the Swedish midfielder from close range.

The Hatters remain third, six points behind Reading, but are only four points worse off than their title winning season, last year, at the same stage.

And the statisticians will be purring as Luton have yet to win on a Saturday afternoon, at home, three months into the season. Three played, all three drawn.

After the match Mike Newell was disappointed not to get all three points.

"It's very frustrating because you feel like you've got the game won, they came for a point, that's what it looked like to me."

    Goals

    Luton: Feeney 64

    Plymouth: Djordjic 90.

Att: 8,714 Ref: B Curson (Leicestershire).

    League One

    Hartlepool 2-1 MK Dons

A disappointing away game for the Dons, not a great performance and still no win on the road.

The opening goal came 23 minutes into the first half, a neat move in midfield ended with Steven Quinn slipping the ball through to Izale McLeod, timing his run brilliantly, who then took on Konstantopoulos one-on-one to slip it by the keeper very calmly.

Dons had a second goal disallowed on 32 minutes, McLeod offside from a Lewington cross. It stayed 1-0 till half time and Hartlepool started the second half really well.

They were rewarded after five minutes after a Butler cross from the left was converted by a Dean Lewington touch and the home side had their tails up.

The winner came 38 minutes into the second half. A good delivery from Darren Craddock on the right hand side gave substitute Lee Bullock a header which floated past keeper Baker.

There was enough time for sub Aaron Wilbraham to come on at 40 minutes and to be sent off for a scuffle with Mark Tinkler on 41 minutes.

A poor performance and a long trip home.

After the match the MK Dons manager Danny Wilson was pleased with his teams style of play but not the result.

"Our one and two touch football was excellent and we ripped through the heart of them many many times, they came back into the game with a fluke."

    Goals

    MK Dons: McLeod 24.

Hartlepool: Lewington 50 og, Bullock 84.

Att: 4,337 Ref: C Webster (Tyne & Wear).

    League Two

    Lincoln City 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe set a new club record here last season when they made it nine away victories, and another one was set this term. They are now unbeaten in 15 league encounters.

The first half was a scrappy affair with neither side really dominating, but the travelling fans got their monies worth in the second period.

Lincoln's unorthadox mix of direct and slick passing seemed enough to break the run when they took the lead six minutes into the second half.

Martin Robinson took advantage of a misplaced clearance to score from three yards. Cue a fightback and from an unlikely source.

Centre-half, Mike Williamson, flew to head in an equaliser with 20 minutes to go and a point looked inevitable.

But when the luck is with you, things seem to go your way. Williamson rose at the far post in stoppage time to secure Wycombe three points.

After the match the Wycombe manager John Gorman was pleased with the fight back.

"One nil down, rubbish goal, but the lads showed fantastic character, we didn't deserve to lose the game today."

    Goals

    Wycombe: Williamson 69, 90.

    Lincoln: Marvin Robinson 52.

    Att: 4,347

    Ref: G Hegley (Hertfordshire).

    FA Cup (4th Qualifying Round)

    Exeter City 0-1 Stevenage Borough

Stevenage, they beat Exeter City, 1-0 at St James' Park, with defender Barry Laker heading the crucial goal, twelve minutes after the interval.

In the first round proper of the FA Cup, Stevenage have been drawn away to Kettering Town.

After the match the Stevenage manager Graham Westley was delighted with the win.

"It was a tough trip to come down here, it's never an easy to place to come. The boys were very professional on the afternoon and I thought deserved to go through over 90 minutes."
