    Football: 1 October 2005

All the news from the matches involving Luton, Watford, MK Dons and Wycombe.

    CHAMPIONSHIP

    CARDIFF CITY 1-2 LUTON TOWN

Luton Town secured their fourth away win of the season with a 2-1 victory at Cardiff, which left Mike Newell's side third in the Championship. Euan Duncan was at Ninian Park.

This was an action-packed game full of incident which Luton just about deserved to win.

They gifted Cardiff their goal after nine minutes. On-loan striker Michael Ricketts was was presented with the ball at his feet to score inside a post.

Cardiff were left appealing for offside on the half hour as Dean Morgan struck a sweet half volley inside a post for the equaliser, although the scorer wasn't the potential culprit.

Midfielder Peter Holmes prodded the ball over the line shortly before the hour from an impressive Steve Howard header, and Howard later rattled the post.

Cardiff all but equalised as Darren Purse also struck the woodwork, as did Michael Ricketts with a header and then Ricketts was denied with a combination of Hatters' keeper Marlon Beresford and defender Carlos Edwards right on time.

Luton breated a collective sigh of relief at the end especially as they finished with ten men when Paul Underwood came off injured and the Hatters had already used all three substitutes.

    Goals

    Cardiff City: Ricketts 9

Luton Town: Morgan 30, Holmes 57

Attendance: 14,657 Referee: M Jones (Cheshire)

    WATFORD 0-0 LEEDS UNITED

Watford drew at home to Leeds and go into the break fifth in the Championship. Simon Oxley was at Vicarage Road.

It was honours even with defences on top and Watford missing several key players at both ends of the pitch.

With 25 minutes to go Leeds sat back and looked happy with the point, and although Watford's youngsters tried hard, none more so than Ashley Young, they found Gregan and Butler tough nuts to crack as Luton had done back in August.

Rob Hulse had seen a first half shot hit both posts, with neil Sullivan saving well from Young, 13 minutes from time. And that was about it as the second half became more of a stalemate, after a lively but unproductive first period.

Watford go into the international break without a win in four matches, but are more than happy to be fifth in the Championship.

Attendance: 16,050 Referee: B Curson (Leicestershire)

    LEAGUE ONE

    MK DONS 3-1 SWINDON TOWN

The Milton Keynes Dons won their second successive match, with a win over Swindon at the National Hockey Stadium. Luke Ashmead reports.

With back to back wins for the Dons, it seems that the corner has finally been turned.

It was Swindon though who took the lead after seven minutes with a well delivered corner from the right and Fallon's header was well placed past Baker.

The Robins took the lead into half time but three minutes into the second half the Dons equalised. Paul Mitchell passed a great ball to Kamara who ran into the 18-yard area and finished with his right boot passed Heaton.

Edds got the Dons second 31 minutes into the second half, capitalising on a spill from the keeper and then four minutes later Stephen Quinn delivered a good cross from the left for Izale McLeod to finally get the ball in the back of the net with a diving header.

Three points, and on the second half performance, thoroughly deserved.

    Goals:

Milton Keynes Dons: Kamara 49, Edds 77, McLeod 81

    Swindon Town: Fallon 7

Attendance: 5,536 Referee: J Singh (Middlesex)

    LEAGUE TWO

    WYCOMBE WANDERERS 3-3 CHESTER CITY

Wycombe remain unbeaten but had to settle for a point after a 3-3 draw at home to fellow high-flyers Chester. Ian Stringer was at the Causeway Stadium.

The unbeaten run continues for Wycombe Wanderers with another goal fest, but this time John Gorman's men had to come from behind twice in the first half, and they hadn't had to rely on Nathan Tyson's golden touch. Tommy Mooney and Roger Johnson were both on target.

It was a bad day all round for the country's top scorer, Birmingham City boss Steve bruce was observing today's events, but the Tyson qualities column won't have been added to because he was carrying a knock and was substitued at half time.

The Chairboys took a second half lead with Mooney's sixth of the season, but they had to settle for a point when ex-Everton striker Michael Branch levelled on the hour.

The home fans have seen 22 goals in the last eleven days - football's boring? Do me a favour!

    Goals:

Wycombe Wanderers: Mooney 24, Johnson 44, Mooney 50

    Chester City: Drummond 10, Branch 36, 60

Attendance: 5,145 Referee: K Wright (Cambridgeshire)
