    Carling Cup: Round Two

All the news from Luton, Watford and Wycombe's Carling Cup matches.

    READING 1-0 LUTON TOWN

Luton Town went out of the Carling Cup at Reading, with a late John Oster goal settling the tie. Euan Duncan reports.

Predictably it wasn't a classic but Luton can feel a little hard done by after having more than their fair share of possession, and in the manner of Reading's winner.

The Royals were awarded a free kick ten minutes from time and winger John Oster's curling effort eluded everyone in the penalty area, bounced once and crept inside the far post.

The closest Luton came to a goal was Dean Morgan's fierce drive over the bar early in the second half, while Chris Coyne went close with a header midway through the first half. But the Hatters never seriously tested Reading keeper Markus Hahnemann.

So, the Royals progressed to Round Three and Luton can focus on Friday's Championship match against Sheffield Wednesday at Kenilworth Road.

    WATFORD 2-1 WOLVES (aet)

Watford are through to the third round of the Carling Cup beating Wolves after extra time. Simon Oxley reports.

Another Carling Cup run is underway for Watford whose youngsters gave Wolves' much more experienced team a lesson in desire, especially in the extra half hour.

By then, Watford had used or were using four of last year's youth team and two of this year's compared to Wolves' collection of internationals and seasoned pros.

But the youngsters grew in confidence after a slow start, which had seen them go 1-0 down to Kenny Miller's 11th minute opener. One of the older heads, Clarke Carlisle, headed the Hornets level in first half stoppage time and with George Ndah missing a sitter and Alec Chamberlain saving the last kick of normal time, we headed into extra time.

Cue another Chamberlain save and Carlisle was again on hand to head in another set piece to set up a tense last 15 minutes. It was hardly that though, as Wolves failed to muster another chance and Watford were through and into Saturday's Third Round draw.

    WYCOMBE WANDERERS 3-8 ASTON VILLA

Wycombe led 3-1 at half-time, but lost their Carling Cup second round tie to Aston Villa at the Causeway Stadium, as the Premiership side staged a remarkable second half performance. Ian Stringer reports.

Wycombe gave their all in the first half of this match and a look at the scoreboard on the hour mark would have encouraged home fans.

The Chairboys were 3-1 up following a blistering 45 minutes, seeing firstly Tyson's head, the Roger Johnson and Tommy Mooney's aeriel power giving John Gorman's men a well deserved half time lead.

You really couldn't tell the Premiership side in the first period which is saying something, when Juan Pablo Angel and Milan Baros were on the goal hunt for Villa.

But the second half was a different story and when a cruel deflection and an own goal put David O'Leary's men in front, they never looked back. Gareth Barry bagged a couple and James Milner completed a hat trick late on.

But the scoreline did not reflect Wycombe's performance.

    Goals

    Wycombe Wanderers

    Tyson 6, Johnson 18, Mooney 39.

    Aston Villa

    Davis 14, Baros 48, Milner 64, Easton 69 og, Barry 73 pen, 78, Milner 86, Davis 90.
