Championship Luton Town are third, and Watford fourth in the Championship after 2-1 wins on Bank Holiday Monday. Luton Town 2-1 Millwall Warren Feeney and Curtis Davies scored to continue Luton's fine start to the season and keep Millwall bottom. Simon Oxley reports. There's now time for Mike Newell and his players to draw breath and reflect on the fantastic start they've made. Four wins and a draw from their first six matches is surely more than anyone could have predicted, and it was a measure of the new found expectation that fans were frustrated at not brushing Millwall aside. | | Simon Oxley reports. |
Warren Feeney had given the Hatters and early lead but Ben May pulled one back just a minute after the break, and it needed Curtis Davies to poke in the winner 12 minutes from time. Luton looked as though they need a break and Newell remains confident that Davies will still be in the team when Wolves visit on 10 September. Steve Howard will also be available again after suspension. And Chairman Bill Tomlins in his programme notes promised stadium news by then as well. He hopes that agreement can be reached with former Chairman Mike Watson-Challis's Stockwood Park Holdings. Can it get much better?! Hatters' manager Mike Newell felt the busy schedule had caught up with his players. "It's been a hard slog and the players are out on their feet" he said. "It's difficult playing two games in three days, especially with a 12.00 kick off. They put in a good shift on Saturday at Leicester and if you can't get any sort of rest between the two games which we can't, it can be very difficult. Supporters turn up expecting to see decent football and it is a bit of a slog." Watford continued their impressive start to the new Championship season by moving up to fourth place. Derby took an early lead through Bolder in the fourth minute but goals from Matthew Spring and Clarke Carlisle in the second half sealed the points for the Hornets, after Marlon King had missed a penalty, following the sending-off of Derby's Richard Jackson on the hour. Hornets' manager Adrian Boothroyd told Simon Oxley he's not getting carried away with the good start. "It's nice but obviously it's very early days and we've got a load to do" he said. "I'm looking forward to getting on the training pitch now and working on some of the things that will make us more of a team and make us even better because we've got a bit of work to do." Referee: C Penton (Sussex) League One MK Dons 0-0 Port Vale Wade Small missed a first-half penalty as the Dons' winless run continued. Luke Ashmead watched the match. A first League win still evades the Dons as they played out a scrappy 0-0 draw with Port Vale. The deadlock should have been broken six minutes into the game though. Geoff Smith brought down Trent McClenahan in the box but Wade Small's poor spot kick was saved by Mark Goodlad. An early substitution for Milton Keynes saw Malvin Kamara come on for Nick McKoy and he did at least make things happen. It wasn't until the second half though that the Dons managed to carve out some real chances. Gary Smith and Kamara both had good efforts on goal and Clive Platt hit the bar. Port Vale were limited to efforts from Cornes and substitute Birchall but never really looked like scoring and it finished a draw. Attendance: 4,592 Referee: K Hill (Hertfordshire) League Two Wycombe Wanderers 0-0 Cheltenham Cheltenham's Jamie Victory headed against the crossbar but neither team found a way to break the deadlock at the Causeway Stadium. Ian Stringer reports. The scoreline doesn't reflect the game in this one as both sides, unbeaten at the start of play, took a well deserved point. Cheltenham seemed defensive at first, packing the midfield and leaving one up front. They were hit by an attacking Wycombe side early on but eventually dominated the first half and could have gone in 1-0 up when Jamie Victory hit the underside of the crossbar with Wycombe riding their luck. The second half could have seen four goals with both sides going for all three points. The visitors looked sharpest early on with Wycombe finishing strongly. A special mention should go to debutant Sergio Tortes. The young Argentine came on with half an hour to go and set the game alight. A dead ringer for Diego Forlan, his vision, agility and ferocious right foot could prove to be a crowd pleaser. Wycombe remain unbeaten in league Two but Northampton at home on Friday night will be a massive test. Attendance: 5,244 Referee: K Stroud (Dorset) Conference Crawley Town 1-2 Stevenage Borough Stevenage Borough came from behind to win at Crawley with late goals from Darryn Stamp and Danny Williams - although Borough had skipper Jason Goodliffe sent off in stoppage time. Borough found their shooting boots just in time to maintain their freescoring start to the season. After netting at least two goals in each of their first four matches this season it looked as though Boro would come unstuck at Broadfield Stadium as they struggled to create an opening in a lacklustre first half. But Crawley's opener, a Stuart Douglas tap-in from a Ben Judge cross in the 59th minute, sparked the visitors into life. They equalised in the 73rd minute through a Darryn Stamp penalty after Ian Simpemba had handled the ball and Daniel Williams fired a winner from a free-kick 11 minutes from time. |
