Help playing audio/video Presenter Matt Baker grew up in County Durham and spent many happy childhood days in Castle Eden Dene. The Dene is a semi-ancient woodland and its origins can be traced back 10,000 years. Returning with Nature of Britain, Matt has been able to discover a whole new world in a wood he thought he knew inside out. Whilst in the Dene, Matt found one the region's rarest butterflies, the Northern Brown Argus. Despite butterflies having wings they don't fly very far, that is why this particular butterfly stays close to Castle Eden Dene. The Dene has rockrow flowers that the Northern Brown Argus will feed on. Matt helps Dr Sam Ellis of Butterfly Conservation study these rather fussy insects in more detail. last updated: 03/09/2008 at 10:41 You are in: Tees > Nature > Nature Features > Northern Brown Argus |
