Budding film maker Ron Everett from Teesville wanted to be part of a Hollywood experience happening on his doorstep, so applied to be an extra in Atonement...

The opportunity to become a film extra for Atonement came about last summer when Hollywood moved into Redcar to build a film set that would transform the seafront into wartime Dunkirk.

I applied for the position after seeing an advert in the local paper. I got a phone call a couple of weeks before shooting was to commence asking me to attend a costume fitting session at Coatham Leisure Centre.

To understand what it was like to be one of the soldiers involved, I read some history books to familiarise myself with the reality of the situation.

Being on the beach as a film extra we had to understand how these soldiers felt. Extremely tired , hungry, thirsty and dejected.

The brief was to create our own character and to imagine that we were actually on the beach and not knowing if we were about to be attacked or if we would ever be rescued.

I felt very proud to have been fortunate to have been selected to be part of this epic film. It will go down in history to be remembered for many years to come.

Antonement will be shown on Wednesday 5th September at Redcar’s Regent Cinema and then it will be on general release from 7th September.
