Olympics 2004

A GOOD SPORT

Aiming high is what we do best, so in light of the olympics - Laura sees how to aim for the big time, sport wise.

With the Olympics well underway, it wont be long till the next generation of potential olympic gold medallists will be waiting for their chance to get lucky in Bejing, 2008.

The North East has already been home to many stars of the games, such as world record breaker Chris Tomlinson and his amazing 8.27 long-jump, also, Paralympics athlete Tanni Grey Thompson.

It seems like Teesside is home to the sports stars of tomorrow.

Since it is the season in which getting fit is near the top of the list (lounging in beer gardens till the early hours obviously is a close first) I went out to see exactly what sort of sporting talent is ready to unleashed from the local area.

From Football to Skydiving, the range of sports available is extensive and bursting with hidden superstars.

16 year old Richard, from Nunthorpe is a budding golfer.

Richard
Richard plays golf.

Starting off as a footballer at his school, he was forced out of the sport after an injury to his hip, but it was the opportunity that led him to his passion for golf…

"I took up golf after my injury, and basically I never looked back.

"If you enjoy sports, just go for it.

"Hopefully, I want to go to America when I am about 18 or 19.

"You can do a golf scholarship, and play for the teams. But at the same time get a degree too."

There are many hopefuls buzzing around it seems, and Vic, an activity instructor for 7-18 year olds reckons that there is plenty of potential for youngsters to get a head start in sports.

"Whether they want to do climbing, fencing, running, football, there is thousands of opportunities.

"I have a couple of 10 year olds who are starting to compete at professional level in fencing.

"It is fantastic. If anyone wants to get in to sports, it's a long term relationship, training everyday and building your life around it.

"But as long as you have a passion for it, then that's all you need. Basically, just enjoy yourself!"

So, all of you out there who are soaking up the sun while swigging your favourite bottle, just grab your shorts, and your favourite pair of running shoes, get out there and find your sport… you never know where it might lead!...
