How to do the Forces investigation
This short film gives a step by step guide to conducting our Forces investigation. It is designed to be used alongside the activity sheet found with our teaching resources.
Narrator:
For this investigation each group will need a stop watch with milliseconds, assorted materials, such as card and fabric to create race outfits, a results table. Split the pupils in to groups of two.
Narrator:
One pupil will be the racer, the other pupil will be the timer. Pupils must stick to these roles throughout the investigation.
Narrator:
Racers run 50 metres as fast as they can and timers record how long it takes to run that distance.
Narrator:
Each group will use what they've learnt about air resistance to design a race outfit which will make it harder for the racers to run as fast. Refer to the lesson plan for ideas.
Narrator:
It is important to ensure that the outfits they design are safe to run in.
Narrator:
The pupils now create their outfits.
Narrator:
Racers put on their outfits.
Narrator:
Do a final safety check to make sure that the outfit is designed for above the waist, the arms are free to move and there is nothing covering the racers eyes. Refer to the lesson plan.

Timers should swap racers.
Narrator:
Racers run 50 metres in their outfits as fast as they can. Timers record how long it takes to run that distance.

Do this three times and work out the average time.
Narrator:
For each group work out the difference between the first run and the average time with the outfit on.
