Design and Technology KS2: The importance of persistence when inventing

Fran Scott discovers that one of the most valuable qualities for an inventor to have is persistence.

She meets inventor Dan Watson and takes a look at his ‘Escape Ring’ invention, designed to prevent smaller, younger fish from getting caught in trawler nets.

Dan explains to Fran how he spent 3 years developing prototypes, amending their shape and materials to find the perfect solution.

Finally, various inventors give their top tips so that ‘You Too Can Be an Absolute Genius’

Teacher Notes

Following on from the example of escape rings shown, students could work in groups to come up with a basic design to meet an eco-friendly brief.

They should present their design to the other groups and then go through two or three stages of tweaking and improving their design.
