Geography KS3/GCSE: Use of natural resources - the advantages and disadvantages of fracking

Download/print a transcript of the video.

Kristen, a year 9 student from Lancashire, looks into the advantages and disadvantages of fracking for gas.

In the course of her investigation she visits a major energy company that is drilling near her school. She also talks to protesters camped outside the site, a local farmer who is concerned about the risks to his cattle and an energy expert. At the end of the clip, Kristen sums up the arguments and gives us her own personal view.

This clip is from the series Geography: The Big Issues.

NB: Fracking as a means of extracting onshore gas has been under consideration for several decades. In 2011 there was concern that fracking in Lancashire led to seismic activity. In 2019 the UK government imposed a ban on fracking. The ban was reimposed in November 2022, having briefly been lifted earlier in the year.

Teacher Notes

This could be used to demonstrate how geographical skills can be used to investigate a challenging topic.

Students could be asked to identify the types of people Kristen talks to and seeks input from - she listens to both protesters and advocates in an effort to hear both sides of the argument.

It could also be used as part of a series of lessons on energy supply in the UK and students could be asked to answer the question for themselves.

Curriculum Notes

This clip will be relevant for teaching Geography at Key Stage 3 and 4 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 3rd and 4th Level (S1/S2/S3) in Scotland.
