The Remember Me Tree by Lydia L.

Ella didn't understand this new feeling, all she knew was she didn't like it! A feeling so heavy like drowning in a sea of sadness. Salty tears stung her face as they fell like rain drops onto the ground. Ella had lost her Grandpa George. Her head was swirling with the precious memories they'd shared. Like how they would snuggle in the cosy emerald armchair that swallowed you up like a giant hug where they'd read their favourite stories while eating Grandpa's delicious cherry cookies. She remembered how they'd go blackberry picking along the canal, where they would hunt for the juiciest berries to make Grandpa's scrumptious blackberry pie. As Ella stared blankly at the ground she noticed a tiny sapling and a sign that read The Remember Me Tree. Ella was curious, so curious that each day she would water the sapling until eventually it grew into a glorious fruit tree. A tree like she had never seen before decorated with plump berries as red as ruby's.

One day Ella was sat under The Remember Me Tree daydreaming about Grandpa's cherry cookies when suddenly a ripe ruby berries fell to her feet. Ella took a bite and was transported back into the emerald armchair with Grandpa as the taste of cherry cookies danced on her tongue. She dropped the berry in surprise, but then had an idea, a crazy mind-blowing idea! Ella closed her eyes and took her mind back to blackberry picking at the canal. As she predicted another berry fell. Ella took a bite and was instantly eating Grandpa's steaming blackberry pie. In that moment Ella knew exactly what to do. She ran like a lightening bolt into the house and dragged her confused mother to the tree. "Mum" Ella shouted "tell me your favourite memory of Grandpa". "Oh that's easy" her mum replied "it was our family trip to the seaside and me and your Grandpa entered a sandcastle competition but it started to rain. Everyone sprinted off the beach like a stampede but we kept going. We couldn't let a little rain stop us and we made the biggest sandcastle you've ever seen! As a reward we ate fish and chips huddled together under our rainbow umbrella watching the tide wash our masterpiece away. As a smile as warm as sunshine spread over her mum's face, another of the berries fell to the ground Ella handed her mum the mysterious fruit. After just one bite a single tear ran down her mums cheek but the sunshine smile still lit up her face. "It's fish and chips" she cried. "It's Grandpa" said Ella.

Ella and her mum continued to share stories about Grandpa for many years and The Remember Me Tree continued to grow. When Ella was a mother herself the time came when she had to say goodbye to her own. "I miss Granny" said her little girl. Ella took her daughters hand "come with me my love I have something special to show you."
