The Lighthouse by Ariel O.
Lucy always wanted to explore the old abandoned lighthouse. From the distance, it looked like a sentinel, full of bright lights, its siren call inviting her to visit. White and red stripes made the building look like a giant candy cane. The curious girl gathered up her flashlight, and a flask of comforting hot chocolate.
As the clock struck midnight, Lucy plucked up the courage to approach the lighthouse's flint-grey door. The antiquated door handle opened as smoothly as a knife in butter. She stepped forward nervously; cold sweat dripped down her head. Even though the temperature inside was ice cold, her stomach was churning! Out of the corner of her eye, the petrified girl saw a mirror winking in the glare of her flashlight. Without warning, the glass shattered! Jagged shards lay scattered on the grimy floor. Her flashlight fell to the dusty floor, flickering off. Suddenly, the lighthouse was not comfortable to stay in any more! It was dark, dreary and dismal. Frantically, Lucy felt for the flashlight on the floor, and had to turn it back on. Immediately , Lucy realised this place was truly abandoned.
Her heartbeat quickened, as she moved forward - softly and silently as a mouse. Some stairs appeared. As Lucy climbed them, the stairs were moaning like an old, tired giant under her weight. The frightened girl found thick barricaded, old doors (as the lighthouse was 200 years old). As she darted along the labyrinthine path, Lucy saw rats as big as cats, and large, ominous, ebony spiders. A carving on one part of the clammy, cluttered walls, stood out. It had a picture of a monster! Lucy thought to herself that monsters only existed in myths, but in alarm, she darted quickly away - just in case. When she finally found an open space, she set up her torch on the floor. However, this feeling of safety did not last long. Unexpectedly, the light went out! Darkness! From the shadows, a silhouette of a man appeared. His head brushed the top of the door. In a voice louder than a thunderclap, the mysterious man boomed at her to leave immediately. Trembling with fear, Lucy turned to run away. She did not need to be told twice to leave. The flask of hot chocolate clanked to the floor. As Lucy ran away, a bright, ethereal light bounced off the walls, illuminating her way out.
With her heart in her throat, Lucy sped home. Too scared to see if the strange man had followed her, she did not look back. Not even once. When Lucy arrived to the safety of her own home, she could not believe what she had seen. Repeatedly, she told herself never to think about this day. Lucy could not even bear to write about her adventure in her precious journal. From that day forth, she had no more desire to explore that old lighthouse.
