Ipswich Music Day 2008

Ipswich Music Day comes to Christchurch Park on Sunday 6 July, with well known local artists performing alongside the new an emerging acts. Now in its 17th year the event is set to be bigger and better than ever.

Kicking off at midday until 8pm there will be a whole host of acts for you across the six stages.

Rosalita, Pixelh8, SleeperCell and Juliana Meyer will be amongst the acts performing on the SGR, CSV, National Express and acoustic stages respectively.

But on the BBC Radio Suffolk stage we'll be presenting a mixed bill of new talent and crowd-pleasing party bands, finishing off with a tribute to Pink Floyd.

Midday: BBC Introducing hour

Richard Haugh from the BBC Suffolk website will introduce three acts flying the flag for original and interesting music.

Hannah Scott

First up will be roots duo John Ward and Mario Price who are well established on the region's folk scene.

John's latest CD Praying For The Alien was released earlier this year. It's his fifth album and features the superb violin work from Mario.

Next up will be Ipswich singer/songwriter Hannah Scott. This time last year Hannah was basking in the glory of her debut album Till Angels Fall which was Stephen Foster's Best Local CD of 2007.

Since then she's written some cracking new songs and has never sounded better.

Rounding off our BBC Introducing session, all of which is being recorded for future broadcast, is James Severy at the Circus Circus.

BBC Radio One's Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens were amongst those to show their support for James's debut single in March.

The Ipswich singer/songwriter plays a mix of wonky folk and leftfield music combining dubstep and grime beats.

James will be joined at Ipswich Music Day by cellist Steph Harsant, who performed with James for his recent BBC session at the world famous Maida Vale Studios in London.

1pm: URB

URB (short for United Reggae Band) formed specially for African History Month in October last year and enjoyed themselves so much they've stayed together tipping their hats to reggae greats like Bob Marley, Freddie McGregor and Yellowman.

Fans of the Ipswich reggae band Jah Warriors will recognise some of the members of this exciting outfit who also include BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Mark Marcus in their ranks.

Mark plays keyboards. The rest of the line-up is lead singer and trombonist Trevor Jones, drummer Ashton Jones, saxophonist Lloyd Clarke, guitarist Jimmy Love, rhythm guitarist Lenny Beckford, bassist Dougie Blackett and backing vocalist Lloyd Morgan.

They'll be introduced by BBC Radio Suffolk's Mervin Henry who'll then feature highlights of their performance on the Ebony Eye programme from 4pm later in the afternoon.

2pm: Andre De Moller Band

The blues playing barrister is back where he belongs. It's been a few years since Dedham-based Andre brought his all star group to Christchurch Park.

On that occasion Dire Straits bassist John Illsley and Notting Hillbilly Steve Phillips were among his special guests. This time round it's the turn of keyboards player Max Middleton who graced many of Chris Rea's finest recordings in the 1980s having previously worked with Jeff Beck.

Also in Andre's band will be Lincoln Anderson on bass, Greg Titheridge on drums, James Maddison on guitar and Joe Toomey on harmonica. This will be blues from the top drawer.

3pm: South O' The Border

Nolan Wiltz's South O' The Border are an Ipswich musical institution. This soul and funk outfit have been together for well over a decade and never fail to get an audience on its feet cutting the proverbial rug!

The line-up is a Who's Who of the local music scene. While lead singer Nolan struts his funky stuff, guitarist Tim Smith, bassist Doug Blackett and drummer Dave Bynoe provide the musical fireworks. Don't rule out one or all of their regular guests dropping by to get in the groove as well. We're talking about the likes of Mark Stuart, James Maddison and Adam Whyatt.

4pm: The Humdingers

The Humdingers have been together for about three years in their present line up which is Penitentiary Paul hollering and aiming at the circles, Tattooed Tom slapping his one man dinghy, Voodoo Vernon twangin 'n' yellin, and Swampy honkin' and a slidin'.

The songs are an eclectic mix from Elvis classics to songs about electrified donkeys. They are truly international musicians now having played in Milan and the Orwell Truck stop in the same week!

These boys sure haven't got a clue what's going on anymore and hope you don't either. So just sit down, relax and throw insults and soft fruit at the stage.

Prepare to be confused. Their set is being recorded for future broadcast.

5pm: Soultown Chic

Soultown Chic were formed to allow the members of the band to perform music they enjoy.

This 8 piece band will wow young and old alike with a selection of soul and seventies classics.

Soultown Chic are no strangers to the BBC Radio Suffolk stage at Ipswich Music Day, and have also performed on the BBC's stages at the fireworks extravaganza on Christchurch Park and at the Suffolk Show.

The band members are Jock Davies - vocals, Sue Double - vocals, Alison Jennings - vocals, Roy Little - bass, Steve French - keyboards, Dave Ellingham - sax and Dave Lingard - guitar.

6pm: A Saucerful Of Floyd

A Saucerful of Floyd (ASOF) brings together four outstanding Suffolk based musicians to re-create the sight and sound of the legendary Pink Floyd.

After many years of performing as the Racketeers, the band had secured a strong following and were regarded as one of the top cover bands in the east of the UK.

But it was the liberal sprinkling of Pink Floyd covers in their performances that really set them apart and very much above the rest.

The demand from their fans to produce and present a whole Pink Floyd show became every stronger and after much planning during the summer of 2007, ASOF was launched to an eager public in November of that year.

This was a performance that was to receive much acclaim from fans and music professionals alike for it's note perfect and faithful re-creation.

ASOF is fronted by lead singer and guitarist Stevie Doherty. Stevie was formerly the lead singer with the Sensational Alex Harvey Band and brings with him a rich and more rounded vocal style coupled with an amazing guitar performance.

On bass guitar and backing vocals is Bob Stiff. Bob is the embodiment of the difference between a bass player and bass guitarist. His playing fills, enhances and creates the feel of Floyd and supports this with some truly harmonic vocal support.

Tim Haigh on keyboards brings some to the deepest and longest sustained moods that you are ever likely to hear. Tim also creates and provides all of the unique Floyd sound attacks without which the show would not function.

Providing the engine room is Ben Stiff on drums. With a performance which is a well crafted mixture of subtlety, balance and power, Ben lays the foundation on which the whole performance is ably supported.

Their performance is being recorded for future broadcast.
