Chantry's cub reporters

Seven school children became roving reporters for a sport bulletin at Chantry High School, Ipswich. The aim of the day was to practise using equipment, getting used to being in front of a camera and talking to people about specific subjects.

They interviewed two former Ipswich Town footballers - Simon Milton and Bryan Hamilton - and they sent questions to yachtsman Sir Robin Knox Johnson via email because he is out at sea.

The editor of the day was Josh, the presenter was Naomi and the three reporters were Katy, Liam and Matthew. I was the camera person and found that we all had to work as a team to a deadline to finish this news project, working on different things at different times so it could all get done.

We had a strict time limit to do the interviews, but we succeeded. We sometimes changed roles to have a chance at experiencing the different roles of filming and reporting.

We interviewed Simon Milton, who kindly let us borrow a moment of his time to ask him some questions. He thinks Ipswich Town could go higher in the Championship.

We also interviewed Bryan Hamilton who's also a former Northern Ireland international who now advises Antigua and Barbuda. He told us he is still a 'tractor boy' at heart and can be seen on the terraces whenever he is home!

In an exclusive email interview, Sir Robin Knox Johnson told us he will be spending Christmas at sea because he is doing the 5 Oceans Race so he has the presents from his grandchildren on board.

The pupils are taking part in BBC News School Report. Ros Smith, a producer on the project was happy with the progress: "I am really impressed with their script writing skills and they thought up some great questions for the guests. On the school news day in March I think they will do an excellent job."

BBC News School Report aims to engage 12 and 13 year olds with news. On March 22nd 2007 schools across the country will be making the news themselves. We’ll keep you updated on how Chantry High School in Ipswich does on the day.
