Which ever term you use it seems that large groups of motorists have taken to the car parks of Ipswich. Rebecca Barry set out to discover if this trend is a public nuisance or misunderstood hobby. On the same evening that I set out to learn more about boy racers the police and Ipswich Borough Council got there before me. There have been so many complaints about anti-social drivers in the car park at the back of the Zest nightclub, that a private security firm has been called in. ![]() Zest nightclub in Ipswich. Emily, commutes to work from Ipswich train station and parks her car in the Ipswich Village, car park on West End road. She finds the presence of the groups concerning. "I'd got a late train from work and there were lots of boys racing around the car park, doing handbrake turns, it wasn't very nice at all," said Emily. Fellow commuter Rachel has had a similar experience and has raised her concern with the police and the local council. "Coming back as a young girl on my own is very intimidating, apart from the fact that it makes you feel unsafe, you're paying over a grand a year to park here," said Rachel. Rodney Cook is the manager of StreetCare for Ipswich, the organisation responsible for services that affect the streets and open spaces of the town. He is working with the local authorities to resolve the issue. "We were really very concerned that there could be a fatality or a serious injury, either to one of the customers or one of the lads performing the stunts," said Rodney. ![]() West End Road, Ipswich. As a result of these concerns he's decided to bring in some protection. Every night from 7 o'clock two security guards stop any potential trouble makers from entering the West End road car park. The council has set aside 6 thousand pounds for the clamp down, but they say they would usually have to spend three hundred and fifty pounds a week just to clear up the litter left by the groups. The police are also providing support and are available each evening. ![]() But the extra security is just a short term measure and inevitably the drivers have moved elsewhere. The car park outside the Staples store on Grafton Way and the area around Yarmouth Road have now become popular alternatives. 23 year old Sean used to use the car park behind Zest night club. "There are a few cars causing trouble now, but we just keep ourselves to ourselves, there are no drunken people wandering about, we're just having a chat and a giggle," said Sean. Twenty one year old Matthew Hillyard has spent thousands of pounds on his pride and joy, his Toyota Paseo. He's very proud of his car's hydraulic suspension, vertical lifting doors and full leather re-trim. Almost every part of the car has been modified in some way, it's even got television screens and a computer console inside. Matthew and his friends used to spend their evenings at the Ipswich Village car park on West End road but now they have found an alternative spot on Burrell Road. He feels they are being unfairly penalised. ![]() Matthew Hillyard's Toyota Paseo "It's hard to find a space to just be and chat without causing havoc for everyone," said Matthew. Matthew is keen to separate himself from those who drive aggressively on Ipswich's streets. He feels he gets tarred with the same brush. "It's purely on the basis of the car I drive. Because it's not a standard car you see on the roads. This has had thousands of pounds spent on it, and I wouldn't want to go racing around because there's too much to lose," said Matthew. Ipswich Borough council say they are willing to discuss arrangements for an alternative meeting place for genuine car enthusiasts, though Matthew thinks that more effort needs to be made to better public understanding of the hobby. "There's got to be a realisation that not everybody is a seventeen year old hooligan wearing Burberry and racing around the streets," said Matthew. last updated: 17/11/2008 at 14:59 Have Your Saymitchell raymond apps mark Shaun Mo daniel ian aherne antony matthews Robert Spino bradley dustin ellis lewis hughes Kayla damien horner kate Damien Horner mahi saini india casper ls14 jazz salina Daniel ricky Edward Seely, NJ zeb cody chappo Andy 0rient_iiLiias rui donaldo Dzia xxDAMIENxxls14 damo leeds Dale Derick Steve ben reed melissa loveridge miissyp John shah James.paseo jamied90 ZAHEER paseo andrew moneeb nathan lego head Jenny ALEX DAVO keith thomas mccann steve griff josh ?!?!?!
