hiya matthew i think your find this problem is over the uk i live in dorchester n we have the same problem n no matter what you say or do the trubbled ones follow you n the police always seem to pick on the local guys that are there on a day to day basics.i have my brand new car taken away from me just cuz i was turning round to chat to a mate n i mite have a bad history with the police but its a £10k car i have n there was cctv but they wnted my car but in the same hand i can understand where the outsiders come from as i was nearly ran over by one of my old crew when he was messing about i found a car park well out the way n now i hang out there n we now intract with the counciln dorset police plus the few resedents that are in the area well i hope you get it sorted soon n nice car

hi im from portsmouth and we have the same problems, a lot of us want to meet up and just show the cars. but you will always get those few that will come in and ruin it by driving their cars fast and playing their music loud.ther is not enough places for car enthusiasts to meet and something needs to be done about it!

Same opinion as Matt, i drive a 93' Paseo, and its in the process of being tuner, but cash is tight, some many kids in my neighborhood drive like tht, i did once, but thought about it a second time, i jus want a place to meet up and chill....but cops keep pulling me over to find a reason to give me a ticket or to just question me and yell at me....i feel like something should be done asap all over...jus give kids and young adults a place to chill and talk and show off what we got, without all the commotion.

Honestly some of these comments are pathetic. Why do these people feel that the council 'owe' them places to race around in these noisy cars. If you want to race cars go and join a proper club and race them on circuits. If you can't afford it don't modify your cars. Hobbies are expensive, don't modify your cars unless you can afford to race them on race tracks and pay for the insurance.Town centres are not designed for these noisy dangerous vehicles, As for the lady who commented on the fact that these areas are not residential....HELLO....... people do actually live in town centres, town centres do not empty out after 5.30pm. Finally I would just like to add that if these people are short of things to do in their spare time, perhaps they could spend some time learning how to write English properly. I myself have a Toyota Paseo, and I intend to modify it, and I think it's ridiculous that everyone who modifies their car, gets branded the same - yobs, chavs, criminals. Hi. Im a 41yr old mum of 3 teenage daughters and we live in Framlingham. Yes we get our fair share of "Boy Racers" too but we also have true car enthusiasts like Matt (by way im no relation to him), who just want to go somewhere and meet up with mates and compare notes about cars etc. The boy racers do cause problems for everyone - not just people out at night but also during the day. Framlingham, like Southwold and many other small towns as well as larger ones, have to put up with childish yobs zooming past them with out a care in the world. Yes my girls go out with lads who go up the D's at night but id feel far better if i knew they were somewhere that they could go legally without causing problems to others (even if they are not the trouble makers themselves). Im trying to think of places in Ipswich that could be suitable for such a meeting place - the only 1 that springs to mind at the moment is - "Trinity Park" (the old suffolk show ground). Everywhere else seems to get built on.

The problem with people today is that they are to over oppoinated and sterotypically towards what you have pin pointed as "Boy Racers" and "Car Euthusiasts". I think that there is no such term as "Boy Racers" and "Car Euthusiasts". Weather somebody has a car which has been modified or not they still speed and 'ragg' their cars. Everyone is entitled to freedom and the local authorities are taking this away. There is now gaurds on Ipswich Village Car Park and now in Sainsburys on Hadliegh Road and as well as gates on Staples and Carpet Right on the 'double- D's'. The Council are kicking up a fuss about the litter problems which was caused by boy racers in Zest Car park. From experience i can't remember seeing 1 single bin in the car park. Maybe if these was in place there wouldn't be as much as a bigger problem. At the end of the day we are all "Gary Boys" and enjoy what we do best. We Pay road tax and we will use the roads how we feel is right keeping it under the speed limits!! All the people which hads moaned about us is nearly the older generation. Dont listen to the press all the time hear it from our point of view. There were gary boys 10 years ago, today and in 10 years time. LET US BE!!!

You need to see both sides of this debate. It is great that the lads value and create great cars but they could police themselves and realise that public car parks are simply not the place to do hand brake turns. Maybe Suffolk County Council could select a suitable disused airfield (we have lots in this area) and invite the lads to "misbehave" there? Banning the cars simply moves them to another location.

Like anything else a few bad apples spoil it for everyone. Like Matthew my sons when younger (at least 10 years ago) were part of a group of lads and lasses who met in a car park (not in Ipswich) most evenings to talk about their cars. They never raced around and we always knew where they were and also knew they were not out drinking or taking drugs hanging around on street corners making a nuisance of themselves. Like Matthew they worked hard and spent alot of money on their cars so had no interest in driving them in a manner that would damage them. In their case the local police even used to drop by and have a chat with the group. They have subsequently gone on to become very hard working and responsible parents themselves - unlike alot of youngsters who seem to have no hobbies apart from drinking and hanging around outside pubs and off licences etc. I totally agree that racing around in cars is dangerous and certainly do not endorse this behaviour and loud music in the vicinity of householders is unacceptable. So come on Council help the genuine young car enthusiasts find an acceptable venue and clamp down only on those who are not.

Lee, why not pay for somewhere you can go and be with your friends? I pay for the theatre, cinema and restaurants. Or negotiate with a landowner so you can use their land for a nominal fee. The problem is that pedestrians fel intimidated by the speeding drivers - and you must all admit that there are plenty who do not stick to the 30 mph limit - it's dangerous - you've seen the tv ads - hit someone at 30 and they will live - at 40 - they die. Stop being so selfish. Ok so car modifying is a hobby - good for you - so is fishing or playing darts. Just find somewhere to do it safely and without causing a public nuisance

If somebody were to set up some kind of organised event or 'club', where there is a set meeting place (used with permission of the owner), where somebody takes responsibility for the club (who is or is not allowed to join, and ensuring that responsible and friendly behaviour is adhered to), then I don't see why people can't get together.

judging by the comments people have left here they seem to all have had a personal experience being nearly run down by reckless "boyracers" but i'm sure if you look at the stats of any town the people who have/cause accidents are old and middle aged people who "think" they can drive. I personally drive a modded car and i am an enthusiast. There are a small minority that take things too far with there stereos and the way they drive, but why are we all tyed off with the same brush? I see more people in there family cars speeding and cutting people up than any "boyracer" and i have been hit 3 times by people in 4x4's not concentrating. At the end of the day the scene is growing more and more and they will never get rid of us so the best thing is to help us get out of every bodys way and keep all parts happy.For those of you who think it is sad spending all this money on our cars, well its not about the money its about the passion for making something different, we could be known as the new age "mods". I just think it is unfair for all of us be treated badly because of a minority, what doesnt help is the fact were always in the news and were seen as imtimidating, i'm no more imtimidating than one of your friends, i'm just a normal bloke following a hobbie.

I feel for the genuine enthusiasts and can understand that they want to meet and hang out. However, the noise of the minority who feel they have to use the area as a race track does affect residents who live as far away as the station. Why don't the genuine people report the idiots to the police or point out to them that they are not welcome, don't let them give you a bad name. If it is only a very few, it should be no problem. I do find it strange that so few people can cause so much noise and aggravation and that so few people can drop so much litter!!

Its always been the same - when groups of youths gather people feel threatened and the police bully their way in - Ive been involved in the free party scene of the 90's, the local Bmx / motocross scene and other events where like minded individuals have gathered to discuss/ enjoy their hobby be it motorised or musical- usually miles away from people or built up areas but still we used to get busted or moved on - if you dont conform to what everyone thinks is normal you have to put up with persecution!

Would'nt it just be easier, when you find a new place to meet, socialise and show off your motors, that you AVOID undertaking activities that will encourage police attention. Be civil and you'll get treated civil! Whilst I'm not a car enthusiast myself and fail to see the appeal of your hobby ( I would dearly love to know who owns the modified red Toyota MR2 with the exhaust pipe channelled up the rear passenger side and over the roof- boy did that give me a giggle when I was stuck behind it on London RD)I doubt anyone would object to you all meeting if you dont upset anyone!

My fiancee and I use to go to car shows like Max Power and shows at Santa Pod with his Honda Civic and my Honda Del Sol. His baby blue civic was featured in Bansai Magazine. I loved the fact that we could do what we wanted to our cars and not get hassled. Back in the U.S. his show car has been sitting in our drive way because it isn't "street legal". I am one of these so called "boy racers", "chavs" and whatever else people may call us. At the end of the day we don't have anywhere to go now zest car park is closed for me and my friends it's a real shame because not only is it a place where we can socialise but also a way of meeting new people. You get idiots everywhere you go, there's always someone to spoil everybody's fun. Furthermore just because some one has a modified vehicle doesn't make them a dangerous driver and the police and some members of the public should learn not to sterotype us "youngersters" all the time.

It makes me laugh how certain people say that we are "immature" and "careless drivers". I'd say over 75% of us "boy racers" are extreemly safe drivers. I think that the elderly who drive around Cardinal park at 20mph, cutting everyone up are more of a danger then us lot driving at a slightly faster pace. It's not really a big issue to most of us that Zest is closed as there are always other places to move onto. Zest was just the centre of things. But there are, and will be lots more places we can move on to.

4 wheels and 1 brain-cell. Here in Southwold we are plagued by them. I, myself have almost been run down twice, by some halfwit in a blue Vauxhall Astra with tinted rear & side windows, who comes steaming off the pier car park with his radio banging away and a mobile phone glued to his ear. (If you're reading this sunshine, you've got your hat on back to front.) My nephew was almost knocked off his bike by the same clown whilst he was going to work along Ferry Road. Not so long back, the police had a clamp down in Beccles. 14 vehicles were stopped, 7 fixed penalty notices were served, 5 warnings given and 2 cars confiscated. Not one of the drivers lived in Beccles.

I totally agree that Car Enthusiasts need somewhere to go, but I do feel that trying to cross the road where the post office is becomes very dangerous after around 7pm given the speeds that some modified cars take those bends. Unfortunately if the Cardinal Park car park is full, the nearest is the Zest Car Park. It also becomes very annoying to be sitting outside a pub somewhere enjoying a drink in the evening (i.e. Old Orleans) only to have it spoilt by someone driving past with their stereo up full blast. I agree that not all car enthusiasts should be tarred with the same brush, but I feel that there is a large majority rather than minority that spoil it.

i think they should keep zest carpark open at nights for young drivers as there really isnt anywhere for us to go, we nned to make a few changes as in litter dropping, and speeding but it is a sensible place where we can park up and have a chat, without driving about on the streets, ans causing havoc on the road.

I think these boys need to get a life! They buy a car for £1,000, spend like £5,000 on doing it up, and its value becomes £3,000. Doesn't make any sense to me!

I am a car ehthusiast, and i have hundreds of pounds on my car when we have meeting we always get moved on because oif a couple who go down and ruin it for us this is why i went to my local paper to ask for help we are not these boyracers and its very unfaor to call us this just because we have a modified car come on guys. im now organising a very succesfull show for modified cars and couldnt belive the responce that i got never knbew there was os many out there, i have been on the scence for bout 9 yeras and always had the same problems do u really fink im goin to do hand brake skids and burn outs at the cost my tyres cost me no i dont think so, we in norfolk are doin well at the minute we have a police officer deicated to cruisers which he gives us advise etc this is just a hobby we have we cant we be left to enjoy it instead off being branded boy racers which we are certainly not!

I think it is disgusting that people have commented along the lines of "we may have broken the speed limits and done some daft things,but its all about learning" what planet are you living on??!! You are in a town centre, on a one way system, surrounded by commercial properties, where pedestrians are constantly crossing the roads! See how much fun you will have after you have run down innocent people just popping down to the cinema or out for a meal. That will be one hell of a learning curve. Admiring others cars and talking is fine, but when it comes to justifying speeding down urban streets in the name of 'fun', i feel you have crossed a line of common decency and respect for others lives and safety.

im 18 and drive a slightly modified corsa and hate being branded a boy racer i realy look after my car and drive sensible but still i get pulled by the police on a regular basis just because i have some nice wheels whats that about?then i c some boys about my age in there bashed up bangers racing around with a car full of kids and they get away with it,they are the ones who cause accidents hang around these car parks makink trouble and are likely to not have insurance etc. to me haveing a modified car is the only way to have a sporty looking and feeling car with out the huge insurance bills at my age its nothing to do with racing, this idea of orginsed meetin places are a gd idea for real enthusiats bt the trouble will remain with the hooligans elsewere

I am a car modifying enthusiast and I have spent a fiar bit of money and a lot of time modifying my own car which I love to bits. Therefore, driving on the public roads like a lunatic is not an option as like Matt, I agree that there is too much to lose by driving unsafely. There are many of us among the modifying community that promote safe driving by example, as well as safe modifying. Unfortunately, there are always a few who like to ruin our reputation. So why not give us a place to meet? ... after all, what happened amongst many towns & cities when skateboarding became popular - parks were built ... When England went to Germany for the world cup matches - only a small minority ruined it by getting involved in fights, but we were still welcome in Germany ... There will always be a minority in every group or hobby that will ruin it for the rest of us. Some of them just need educating or advice, others will require more serious actions to resolve the problem. I too have been sworn at and had the "one finger salute" whilst driving to or from work for having a modified car. All I ask is that people get to know the real us instead of just branding us all with the same name when they have encountered an idiot or two on the roads. In my personal experience, the worst drivers on the road are usually business men & women in expensive cars (and often holding a mobile to their ear), and some people in big 4x4's who have "big car attitude" ... I believe that "boy racers" have become the scapegoat for all bad drivers when it's not true.

an all too familier story. its the same old minority who ruin things for others. at the end of the day, local authorities have to listen to what enthusiasts have to say and how they feel, the tuning industry is worth millions, and is unlikely to go away. cruisers are here to stay....

i would jus like to say that not everybody that goes down town at night is a chav. yes i own a motorcycle and i go to the 'Dz'to see my friends but what really makes me angry is that the people that complain about us calling us hooligans and chavs dont know what they are talking about because if they came into staples car park on a night whern there is loads of people there they would find that every single person there has a genuine passion for bikes and the majority have full bike licences. i speak for every biker when io say we dont want to seem intimidating its just people buying into the sterio type that has been formed in peoples heads and if it is such a bother to the council then why do the police tell people to go to staples car park if they think that they are 'loitering' in other parts of the town so i wish they would make their minds up and leave us be.

I am a GENUINE Car Enthusiast, its my obsession and i love it! I have been going down the D's for over 4 years and i have many happy memories left in my mind over those 4 years! I hate the fact that a few idiots can spoil it for all of us, its got to the point that i have just been driving along, minding my own business and i have had people shouting at me, telling me that im a danger to the public and that i should be ashamed of myself! For what? Loving cars and loving the Modified car Industry? Please! I have known Matthew Hillyard for a while and we are good friends, like him i have spent thousands of pounds on my car, it is my baby! I think the Council, Police and the public need to see most of us for what we are really doing - Enjoying our hobby! Why should we get hassle from them, all because they still refuse to see the difference between dangerous drivers and car enthusiasts?

I am now 39 years old and looking back i consider myself as a boy racer, between the ages of 17 and 20 i spent most of my time in my car meeting up in gangs of friends,showing off and generally having fun. Yes we may have broken the speed limits and done some daft things,but its all about learning. During my time as a boy racer i made many new friends and also my wife of 16 years,with whom i have two fantastic children. I now watch youngsters driving fast,gathering together and having fun, why not? Work hard and play hard have fun kids.

As a mother of one of these so called "boy racers" I feel that I have to make comment on the negative way Ipswich Borough Council are dealing with this. The lads, and lasses, have very little else to do in Ipswich, they love driving and modifying their cars is what they feel that they can spend their hard-earned cash on, they can't afford a mortgage due to the rising housing costs, so let them have their time as free and easy spirits. They are in an area which is non-residential and of very few offices operating after 7pm. Regarding the security guards, please do tell me how much they are paid an hour; I am sure that in the present financial climate it would be cheaper to send the street cleaners down than pay agency guards! Give them an area within the boundaries of Ipswich which they can use if you intend not letting them meet there.

these people do deserve a place to show their cars around to people, and i completely agree that hooligans should be sent away, so why not get plain clothed police or something so when there is an event on they can seperate the "real" car enthusiasts with the "fake" ones, it also gets them off our roads.

if the council are actually going to bother arranging something for us they will more than likely make us pay for it. this is one of the few free things we can enjoy, socialising with friends, chatting and having a laugh. i'll believe they are arranging something for us when i see it.
