People at the fair

Suffolk Funeral Fair

Suffolk’s first Funeral Fair took place in Ipswich on Wednesday 29th March at the St Nicholas Centre in Cutler Street.

The Fair was organised by BBC Radio Suffolk and CSV Media to coincide with the nationwide campaign - How to Have A Good Death.

Learning about death at the fair

Exhibitors travelled across the UK to encourage people to talk about what is often a taboo subject. Demonstrations included green burials, cardboard coffins and eco-pods, firework tributes and how a loved ones ashes could be converted into diamonds.

There was also advice on will writing, cookery demonstrations and a New Orleans style jazz band to entertain visitors. Exhibitions took the form of a series of 'How To' demonstrations covering everything from dealing with grief, understanding inheritance tax, and catering for a wake. Solicitors were also on hand to give advice. There was also be an opportunity for visitors to attend an audience with a clairvoyant medium.

"Many people have a natural unease when it comes to discussing death. We aim to inform people in a warm and friendly open environment"

Nick Pandolfi

BBC Radio Suffolk’s Nick Pandolfi was broadcasting live between 9 and 12 at the event. He said, “Many people have a natural unease when it comes to discussing death. We aim to inform people in a warm and friendly open environment.”

Its a good thing that death is being brought out of the shadows..for some reason we in the west want to hide it away like it isnt going to happen to us but..its lifes only sure thing! I for one want to be buried under a tree! [cant think what they call that type of buriel?] so that the tree feeds off me and I become part of it..a fitting memorial in my mind. Are there any others who favour this type of rip? do they cater to it in east angia? I've heard there is such a site in suffolk but dont know where? CALLEN [The Voice]
