Alexander O'Neal

Alexander O'Neal on stage at the Spa

Soul Legend has fans wiping his brow in Felixstowe!

Alexander O'Neal brought his latest show to the Spa Pavilion. Support came from Nat Augustin and his tribute to George Benson. The main act climaxed with around 50 ladeez from the audience up on stage to share the lurve.

Nat Augustin

Nat Augustin

The night started with support artist Nat Augustin who came on stage playing and sounding like the famous jazz and soul legend George Benson. He had everyone out of their seats, performing songs such as Love x Love, Give Me the Night and Turn Your Love Around. Everyone was singing along to the timeless classics. Nat was with Light of The World in the 1980s and has toured with Alexander O'Neal for three years. He was the best support I have seen in a while - a class act.

Alexander O'Neal with fans

Alexander O'Neal with three lucky fans

Showtime - soul legend Alexander O'Neal went down a storm with hundreds turning out to see him perform his greatest hits. As the lights went down, the band kicked in and everyone waited for the appearance of the man himself, then suddenly, large as life, Alexander O'Neal took to the stage and the crowd were on their feet, clapping and shouting out to the soul legend as he sang Criticise.

Alexander O'Neal and Mervyn Henry

Mervyn Henry gets a Vulcan death grip

The party had started and in full voice he walked across the stage as women at the front were wiping his brow. At times he sounded a little out of breath, but he kept the crowd entertained performing more great classics. Alexander O'Neal is known for the bed on stage but this is now replaced by two stools and a bottle of champagne. A lucky lady was chosen to join him as he sang If You Were Here Tonight. Just one thing was missing, there was no encore, but he is still a geat entertainer.

You can listen to Mervin Henry's interview with Alexander O'Neal here....

Join Mervin Henry and Mark Marcus every Sunday on BBC Radio Suffolk for Ebony Eye 4-6pm. 103.9, 104.6, 95.5 and 95.9 FM or online via the BBC Suffolk website's homepage.

If you are an up and coming local R&B or reggae artist I would like to here from you. You can also email your three favourite 70s and 80s soul and reggae tracks to Ebony Eye and your tracks could be played on the show.

Have Your Say

How was the concert for you? Were you one of the lucky ladies who made it onto the stage with Alexander O'Neal?

Sorry to ruin the party ladies. I attended a venue which Alexander had performed in afterwards. Managed to get a wee glimpse of the man himself last night. Just for 1 song. Not really worth the trouble.. The dude walked out in mid performance as the CD player kept on skipping. In my whole life I have never ever seen a man swear and express profanites such as him on stage. I wish in my heart that I had gone to Felistowe with you guys....

I still don't understand why this man didn't become popular in the US. Whenever I play some old school R&B at a party and a song of his plays, people always ask who it is because they love his voice. Is he still on tour and can I get a schedule?

So interesting to see others reviwes of alexander in concert on his recent tour . I saw him for the first time after being a fan since the eighties . Was lovely to see him , but if iam onset was diasppointed with the shortness of the concert , and no encore . Also no programmes or concert material on sale . Thought the conecrt was all calculated , and lacked a personal touch from alex . Seems to be doing the same concert format where ever he goes too. !!!

just seen Alex at the grimsby auditorium last nite. What a massive dissapointment. He was incoherant, the band carried him totally, I cringed watching him. Saw him in Birmingham in '88 and he was amazing...whats happened to him?gutted.

Didnt see him at felixstow , but seen him at Oxford, with a very simlar show as listed in your review. It was brilliant to see him , as i ahve been a follower of his music for 19 years. The conert was brilliant - shame that he didnt do an encore though .!

Yes, my friend (Liz) and i were one of the lucky ladies that made it on stage and it was one of our best moments, it has only! taken us 18yrs (that was the last time we saw him at a gig) to get that close to him and then to give him a kiss made our night, but regret the fact that we did not go and wait for him after the gig. We both hope that he comes our way again soon! This time we will wait
