Steve's Rickshaw Rambles

An Indian rickshaw was the unlikely mode of transport used to get into the heart of communities in North Suffolk.

The challenge

Lowestoft, the UK's most easterly town, was the starting point for a unique journey with BBC Radio Suffolk’s afternoon show. Rachel Sloane, presenter of the show that's on air between 1.00pm and 4.00pm each afternoon, challenged her intrepid reporter, Steve Martin, to visit as many communities as he could during the first week of October.

The idea came about when Steve walked around the Suffolk coast for the programme earlier in the year.

Rachel said: "The feature became so popular and lots of our listeners logged onto the BBC Suffolk website to see the photographs that Steve had taken along the way, that we couldn’t resist asking him to do a similar thing around north Suffolk. He accepted the challenge before he realised what the mode of transport would be!"

Flynnstar Bicycles in Felixstowe agreed to loan BBC Radio Suffolk the rickshaw and Steve went been along to be measured up.

Steve took it all in his stride: "I thought it sounded a great idea – an opportunity to get into the community and collect stories from north Suffolk. I hadn’t realised they were getting me to do it in such style! I’d better get some training in pretty quick if I’m going to survive a week pedalling round country roads in a rickshaw!"
