I’m referring to ‘Ip-spit’ – a forum where young people can come together and display their musical abilities in the form of mcing, beat boxing and a turn on the decks. | | Truth and Paradox at Ip-spit |
The guy running this whole adventure and who came up with the Ip-spit idea is Esra. He explained that the group works so well because it enables people to come forward in a free and fun atmosphere. They can just have a go and develop their skills further. It’s like a network for new artists and who have the opportunity to team up with other people and make their own tunes. The word ‘spit’ in this sense basically means 'spitting or saying your lyrics' – it’s like the 'fast talking' that you hear mainly in Hip Hop and Garage music and some in RnB tunes. I personally get confused between what an MC is and how they differ to a Rapper. Lyrically they both play a vital role in the bringing the track verbally alive – they do the so called singing bit. I see the MC as the person performing live, rhyming to a track that’s being played on a turntable (decks) - whether it’s an instrumental or not. And a Rapper, is the original artist we hear on a track – on an album we play; and later on we may get to see them perform their song live at some sort of gig. Also, an MC I always think, tends to freestyle more. Confused? Well Esra explained that at the end of the day he’s a Hip Hop MC. He also reminded me that the MC term also relates to the Garage scene. So I suppose it is just about labels and the different types of music. The group meets up on Wednesday evenings at the CSV Media Clubhouse which is in Ipswich. From 6pm onwards you’ll find them trying out new rhymes and battling against each other – lyrically! Truth and Pikey who are members of Ip-spit, came on the Ebony Eye show (on Sunday 26th June 2005) with Esra, to talk about what the group does. Truth is an MC like Esra and Pikey is a beat boxer. Both have been trying out new ideas and are looking for forward to bringing their talents to the community. One of the good things about Ip-spit is that everyone’s welcome, and it certainly isn’t just a guy thing - Queenie and Clare also attend the sessions. The group have taken things a step further by taking what they do out to the people. On Sunday 3rd July 2005, they performed live at Ipswich Music day in Christchurch Park, Ipswich. Performing on the Amplifier Stage, the guys and girls gave an energetic display of their vocal talents which were much appreciated by the cheering crowd. They have since been asked to perform at various venues and for different community projects in the county. Ip-spit is certainly focusing on what the young people are doing. Perhaps in the not to distance future, we will have members of the Ip-Spit group giving the likes of the American MCs and rappers a run for their money. |
