Suffolk's beaches: Thorpeness

Thorpeness has much more to offer than just its glorious beach.

You might not have thought it but there really is so much to do in this seemingly sleepy, small seaside town.

When you are worn out from playing beach cricket or you have had enough of paddling in the north sea you can retire to one of Thorpeness's pubs or tea shops for refreshment.

Then if you are feeling brave you can take to a rowing boat or canoe on the mere and explore a mystical world of little coves and islands based on the adventures of Peter Pan.

There is no need to worry about children's safety on the boats, the mere is no more than 4ft deep and life jackets are available on request.

If you still have energy left after that you can take a cliff top walk by the side of Thorpeness Golf club.

You will find Thorpeness just to the north of Aldeburgh, signposted off the A12 near Saxmundham.

I've been here every year for guides boating days in September and as i do a lot of sailing and canoing anyway its probably my favorite calm place to go. the boating lake is definitely my favorite!!!

i think thorpeness is wonderful and that it is ideal for a romantic date or snog.

I lived here for three years in the early 1960's. How wonderful for my brother and I and our spouses and my 11 year old son to return here from the states after all these years. It was just as lovely as when we lived there! We had a wonderful visit and what fun to take Joe on the Meare and let him see the lake we loved so much.A walk by the sea was also a special one.We hope to return again.

I recommend scaring the kids into believing there is a real crocodile in the mere and then taking them to see the wooden sculpture of a croc that is in severe need of up-dating!

my granparents used to take us out on the mere in the summer, and now i take my sister and my friends, it is so calm and such a cool place for any ages

THORPENESS IS FABULOUS I GO EVERY YEAR WITH OUT FAIL AND THE CHILDREN HAVE A REAL GOOD TIME. ITS FAB!! I RECOMMEND IT.
