The White Stripes, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey and singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, were among mourners at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds.

Paul Gambaccini gave the eulogy. He spoke of the legendary DJ’s career.

”You were the most heard and most loved broadcaster of all time.”

And of loss.

”With your passing we all know there’s a little less decency in the world - and a lot less music.”

DJs Bob Harris, Mark Radcliffe and Annie Nightingale attended, Sir Elton John left a wreath of yellow roses.

Up to 2,000 people listened to the public service outside the cathedral via loudspeakers.

Among the mourners outside, was Matt Bis, from unsigned band the Ko Sahn Approach.

“I wanted to be here because John Peel was one of those people who unified a lot of people from a lot of different backgrounds, through just being an approachable, wonderful man.” said Matt.

“It came across through his broadcasting. You got the feeling that everyone got something different out of his radio and television career - but that everyone has this unified view that the man doing what he did was a wonderful person.

“He was engaging and forthright, eloquent and humble. He made people smile. He made people's lives better through the medium of radio, I guess.”

The service ended with clips of Peel talking about his life, before the Liverpool FC anthem You'll Never Walk Alone faded into Peel's favourite track - the Undertones' Teenage Kicks.

==========

John Peel had lived, with his family, in Great Finborough near Stowmarket for many years.
