Originally founded at Greenwich in 1712 to educate the sons of seafarers The Royal Hospital School moved to its present position in 1933. It now occupies a 200-acre purpose-built site overlooking the River Stour.
It is a traditional HMC coeducational full boarding school with 690 boarders, aged 11-18, and continues to offer fee concessions to the children and grandchildren of seafarers.
With a strong emphasis on academic work, there are also outstanding opportunities for music and sports, in particular sailing. A thriving Combined Cadet Force combines adventurous training and service to the community.
There is a strong Christian ethos in the school and the magnificent Chapel is the centre of school life.
