Listen to the way we talk"Voices 2005" was the BBC project which explored our accents and speech here in Staffordshire.
We interviewed people in the county - from Middleport in Stoke, from Chesterton in Newcastle, and Burton in East Staffs. |

Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent
Sajia, Asiya and Eman are all Asian youngsters who've grown up in the Stoke-on-Trent area.. They talk about being part of a minority group in the city, the language their parents use and, of course, boys.. They are all students and Sajia and Asiya also have part-time jobs in Tunstall. BBC Radio Stoke's Paul Stanworth met them one Saturday afternoon at Hanley library.

Nantwich, South Cheshire
Joyce, Jean, Kathleen and Vanda are all members of the Nantwich Townswomens' Guild.
They've got plenty to say on any topic you want to throw at them - especially the Queen's English, the use of Americanisms in English, swearing and texting.
Some of them have lived in the area all their lives, others have settled in Cheshire after time elsewhere.
BBC Stoke's Paul Stanworth met them for tea and biscuits one afternoon.

Chesterton, Newcastle
This group and I met in the bar at the Loomer Road speedway stadium in Chesterton one evening.
Chesterton is a former mining village north of Newcastle.
Janice and Roy Smallwood are married. She is a cleaner; he is a famous bus driver locally, having collected an MBE for his community work.
Dave Tattum is the stadium manager, and also the man responsible for handling the famous Stoke Speedway team which races at the stadium.
Fred Collier is a retired company director.
They loved hearing each others' anecdotes and talking about the area in years gone by... Again, it's obvious that, in Staffordshire, people are proud, even of their own small corners.

The group talks about the words they use when they're thirsty. Janice uses 'gagging for a drink'.. but the rest of the group point out 'gagging' has a different meaning these days...

In British Sign Language, did you know that signs used in Belfast are very different from those used in the Channel Islands? Burton upon Trent
Three generations of Jamaican friends who live in Burton, talk about the words used by the youngsters compared to the ones used by their elders.
The interviewees are: Merle Staple, Angela Bailey, David Albert Douglas, Levi Franklin Watson da 1st, Ashley Barnes, and Amlak Tafari. The interviewer is BBC Radio Derby's Marsha Ramroop.
