| | The three projects are pretty varied. With a bi-lingual touring play for infants-school children, a youth & community interactive project, and a production from the classics from the senior youth group at the theatre, this is somethign for everybody - of all ages!
Multi-cultural venture Probably the most demanding is likely to be the schools production, Two Days As A Tiger (Doh Din Koh Shere) by Maggie Willett.
It's an award-winning bilingual Punjabi-English production, which follows the story of Sidhra, a little girl striving to find courage and friendship.
When Sidrah returns to England from Pakistan, what she needs most is understanding. Against the odds and with help from her beloved grandmother Dadiji, she finds courage and determination. Can she stand up to the bullies and save the school’s newly planted trees?
Two Days as a Tiger is interested in the richness of language, legend and environmental themes, and is meant for children, aged 4-7.
Two Days as a Tiger tours from 20th March - 4th April, with a cast which includes: Quadeer Khalique as Abba/Mr Addiswood; Chike Chan as David Forbes; Ruby Visaria as Sidrah Babib and Renu Arora as Masrurah/Dadiji.
Feel the Pressure The New Vic’s community outreach team, Borderlines, is also busy with a production called 'Pressure'. It's a hard-hitting drama being performed by the young people who have themselves shared their experiences to create this piece of theatre, and it explores issues relevant to their lives.
What happens when a fifteen year old boy who feels under pressure from his parents, school, friends and girlfriend finds that he has no control over his life or emotions? His anger, which started with just a breakfast table tiff, soon escalates and spirals out of control with devastating consequences.
The play is interactive and invites its audience to participate in deciding how it will end. Director of Pressure, Kerrie Frances Williamson says: “The audience journey a day in the life of Mark, and are given the opportunity to help him make better decisions and to change the abusive cycle caused by pressure, alcohol and violence”.
In partnership with Staffordshire Youth Offending Service, it will be performed at The Stafford Gatehouse Theatre on Tuesday 25 March at 7.00pm; and Wednesday 26 March at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Tickets are free and available from the New Vic Box Office on 01782 717962.
Brecht gets the Youth treatment
Finally (but not leastly!), the New Vic Senior Youth Theatre presents their production of Bertolt Brecht’s classic The Caucasian Chalk Circle, a sweeping story of courage and devotion set against a background of war and revolution.
This lively and compelling story centres on Grusha, a peasant girl who rescues a child during an armed rebellion. Having grown to love the child, Grusha doesn’t want to give him up when his mother arrives to claim him. The matter is put before unruly judge Azdak, who submits both women to the Chalk Circle test to decide who should keep the child.
This a show with live music and an energetic cast of 25 playing over 90 characters. Youth Theatre Director Susanna Harding says: “These young people have really lived up to the challenge of putting on such a passionate and committing play.”
The New Vic Youth Theatre cast includes: Chris Ashman, Emily Astles, Alex Brown, Ffion Carlin, Emma Carney, Alec Caton, Stephen Condliffe, Greg DuBois, Jake Ellis, Kirsty Elsby, Charlotte Gajda, Amy Gray, Vicky Hughes, Rachel James, Naomi Jones, Liv Lyons, Ryan Maguire, Sarah Mills, Sarah Price, Leila Pritchard, Natalie Rashford, Nima Seifi, Anna Stubbs, Sammi Tomkinson and Adam Turner.
The Caucasian Chalk Circle plays at the New Vic on 20th March at 2.30pm, and on Friday 21st and Sat 22nd March at 7.30pm - on the New Vic main stage.
Tickets for school groups are being offered at a stunningly affordable price of only £1.00 each, with other tickets going for £5.00 / £3.50, from the New Vic Box Office on 01782 717962.
