I don't understand the BBC's comments on the Late Show. Firstly they say something had to be done because there was a dwindling listenership, then they say numbers of listeners don't matter. Sadly I suspect that lsiteners don't matter at all.
I am probably one of this supposedly hard core of regular listeners, and I have been listening since John Tainton's time. The show has built up over that time a wonderful array of guests (e.g. Stuart Rudd on computers, Michael van Stratten on alternative medicine, John Mayo the healer..... and so it goes on). If there was such a small number of listeners in recent times, how come it was impossible to get through for any of these phone-ins?
Never mind those of us who enjoyed that side of things, and the topical interviews with people in the news. Thanks to all those who built up all this, and all the presenters, who've all brought something very good to the show.
When I travelled to other parts of the country, I realised that we were very lucky in the Midlands to have an intelligent and entertaining Late Show. Now, you might as well listen to any old commercial station if you want a relentless diet of pop music and competitions. Supposedly, the changes were done with a great deal of consultation - but, dear BBC, when are you ever going to consult the loyal listeners?
OK, in this multi-channel age, you have to consult the casual listeners too, but what is going to get any of those to home in on the current Late Show? I would never argue against change for the better - we've had a great deal of that over the years, and many of the changes since John Tainton's time have been very welcome. But this one is bizarre, and done with all the subttlety of a firing squad. I don't blame Frances for the dumbing down of the show - she's got a grotty job to do and someone has to do it. But even frances' engaging personality is not enough to keep me on board any longer.

Getting rid of Alex Trelinski is quite possibly the worst decision that the BBC could have made.
Like many, i was a regular listner to his program which was the perfect late night format that we could have hoped for. Interesting guests, serious discussons (alex could always argue his point and was clear and honest), entertaining competitions and informative discussions thrown in as well. The show attracted a wide audience from young to old (myself being a student.)
Now that the show has been dumbed down, we have a programe that is just the same as most of the competition. And looking at the other responces from people on this board, it seems to me as if the BBC may start to regret this rediculous decision to get rid of alex, and if not they certainly should do!!!

several months ago i accidentally found you programme - i live near chester. this was about computers and i was so impressed i began to listen regularly and also to other equally interesting items.
it made such a welcome change from the endless music and competiions which surround me locally but sadly i find that it has been taken off and replaced with the usual poor quality fare.
Please consider restoring an excellent show and make an old man happy. many thanks -

It would be great if Radio Stoke would start a new 30 minute religious programme every morning with plenty of good old fashioned hymn singing.We could give thanks to God together and start the day with a bang.

Please tell me what is happening to the station I have loved and listened to since the late 1960's?
Barbara Adams disappears we were told originally while she researched a new series but has never been seen or heard of since. No record collectors programme.
Nonni James has gone. Her competitions were in my opinion (for what it counts) were the best and most original on the radio.
Alex Trelinski with his most interesting guests goes while I was away and now Den has been banished to the unearthly slot of 5 a.m. Did he want the change or has he ratttled some one's cage and as a punishment been moved?
The talents of Glyn Johnson are not being used to the full. He is an extremely good interviewer. I am sorry but I feel that whoever is making these decisions is not in touch with the average listener.
Can those who do market research contact me as no one has ever asked me for my opinions or what I would like?

Hi Gillian - I'm delighted to hear you've been a listener since the late 60s. Since then there have been many presenters and many changes to the content of our programmes and we currently have some of our highest listening figures for a very long time. Presenters leave for all sorts of reasons - career change, promotion, retirement, looking for a change of show etc. They are rarely, if ever sacked.
Barbara Adams left the station on very amicable terms after being off sick for almost a year.
Nonni still presents her Thursday evening show although she has given up her Sunday night presentation.
Glyn left BBC Radio Stoke a few years ago to work for another BBC station in Worcestershire. After leaving that job, we were lucky enough to tempt him back to present our weekend breakfast shows but he does not wish to work in Stoke full-time.
Den has not been "banished" to the early slot. He is the vanguard for our daily programming, starting the day with cheerful music, banter and fun. Our two breakfast programmes (one of them now Den's) get the highest number of listeners throughout the day. I realise that loyal listeners sometimes find change not to their taste but we do not alter things lightly and we strive to continue to please. |

Sirs, My parents described the joys of listening to the original Radio Stoke via a Crystal set. The person with the current possession of the headphones would protest loudly at someone " moving my whisker ". ie Displacing the wire contact on the receiver tuning crystal.
This source of dissention was removed for all time by the invention of the valve wireless. Alas this relied on the decidely poor base of Amplitude modulation transmissions. Throughout my youth, little did I realise the abject poverty of the broadcast offerings of ITMA, Gilly Potter, Harry Hemsley and " What did Horace Say ? "Arthur Askey etc. Apparently there were nasty hisses and cracklings.
Hurrah! Frequency modulation to the rescue! Buy this new receiver, it operates at Very High Frequency, and is Freqency Modulated. No hiss, no Crackles, no interference from adjacent stations, just pure sound from the station chosen. Oh, you will need a new special aerial to get full benefits.
Fed up with poor reception? Want to hear the true sounds? Can't stand all the crackles,wheezes, whistles ? Get DAB now! Dab is perfect. You may need to spend a weeks pay buying a suitable receiver,but it will eradicate all those nasty interferences left over from the last time they were eradicated with the advent of VHF FM, remember.
I may wait until sub-ether transmissions via Alpha Centaurus start transmitting direct to the left half of brains. By this time Radio Stoke may have realised that Mr. D Siegertz should be broadcasting during normal daylight hours

Sirs, When is Mr. Sigertz going to return to normal day-time hours ? Currently, there will be nothing of any value following the Paul Damari weather forecast at 8.20 am.
Mr. Glynn Johnson is the only member of the day staff capable of conducting a decent interview. However, as the station's best broadcaster, he too is sidelined for the greater part of the time. Please make announcements by this site, as I will not be wasting time listening to the current broadcast output.

Message to users of this board from BBC Management re Alex Trelinski change
The decision to change the Late Show was taken by the managers of the eight BBC local stations on which the programme was transmitted in full consultation with the presenter, Alex Trelinski. The Late Show had a hardcore of fans but they were very small in number and were falling. There comes a time with any programme, be it on radio or television, when some tough decisions have to be made based on a number of considerations.
We are aware that some listeners will be upset by the change but we are also confident that Frances Finn will prove at least as popular as Alex if not more so.
When Alex first took over the Late Show there were complaints about him too! All presenters take some getting used to, but we hope you will give Frances a chance. These are of course very early days in the life of the new programme.
The BBC does not respond solely to audience figures, but it is one of the measures by which we are judged in the context of the licence fee.
The decision to replace the Late Show did not relate in any way to the number of phone callers (either positively or negatively). As you suggest, these are a highly unreliable measure of the popularity or success of any radio programme, since most listeners are always non-participants.
With regard to audience figures, these are drawn from the industry standard RAJAR analysis. RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research Limited) was established in 1992 to operate a single audience measurement system for the radio industry - BBC, UK licensed and other commercial stations. I am absolutely dismayed at the BBC's response to Alex Trelinski's late show.
Here I was thinking the BBC does not believe in ratings unlike commercial radio stations. Whatever happened to being unique?
I would like to question how the alleged drop in ratings was measured, if it was measured through the number of callers, then that is clearly invalid, as many listeners, like me have enjoyed listening to others rather than taking part themselves.
Nevertheless, the huge interest of the listeners participating with the banter as well as the phone-ins was clearly evident in itself.
How will the listeners now participate in such informative discussions, which seem a thing of the past?
Since the changes have taken place, the informative discussion based on the news of the day as well as the general banter has gone completely out of the window. In addition, Frances Finn seems to be taking less and less phone calls, (I don’t blame the listeners, having to endure tacky competitions and what not) which surely should concern the so called "eight managers".
If they sacked Alex's show due to this alleged reason, then they should take action on the revamped show. I must conclude by saying that I endured two weeks of Frances Finn, in the hope that I would acclimatise to her programme, but enough is enough, I can’t stand "commercialised" programmes, especially when such behaviour is advocated by the BBC;
Alex always defended the BBC for its uniqueness, and this is the way they pay him back… an absolute disgrace. I shall not listen to the late show ever, in my protest over this issue, and I know I'm not the only one, what about Trevor from Wallacey, or Lady Sylvia, just to name a few.
To the eight managers: The only solution is to BRING BACK ALEX!

Satellite - there are no plans to place BBC Local Radio stations on D-Sat or digibox. This is because of the sheer cost of providing the space for such a large number of stations. |

I sooooooooooooooo agree! Alex's absence is a loss to the late night slots - all over the East Midlands. He is on in the mornings all this week and next Monday - but after that I do not know. At the moment the latenight slot has been 'dumbed down' and seems to be a request programme!

Where is Alex Treslinski? What are the BBC playing at? I have listened to his late night radio show for the past two years and his "phone in experts" were always a joy to hear.
I especially enjoyed Stuart Rudd the computer expert, his advice was always clear and to the point, so that we could understand what he was saying. Is this another example of the BBc ignoring it's core audience/ I'm disgusted by this treatment.

The lady who is on is OK, but the chatting is less which we enjoyed.

Alex Trelinski has left night radio. It is a sad loss but understand he has to move on, however his replacement makes me switch off the radio after 2 mins. There is too much dire music. It must be hard to put the right music on for this audience.
I think my age group find the music annoying and weak, the older audience must find it "loud" or too "modern". I have only ever heard one other presenter as good if not better than Alex and that this is Scott Chisholm formerly of Talk Radio. How about getting Scott Chisholm on?
I think the old ladies would love him, he like Alex could argue black is white if it made for good listening.I just can not listen to the radio now as such I wonder how many other listeners feel the same.

I have lived in Staffordshire all my life and I listen to Radio Stoke and I am a big fan of Television and Film themes, although the majority of my music theme collection is reference "cult TV themes".
I think it would be a good idea to have a radio programme based upon theme music from TV/Films past and present, from The Sweeney to The Saint.
many formats could be done, possibly incorporating local/national news items referenced to the time of first transmission of the programme theme and/or fashions/fads at the time.
Audience participation in the form of requests and memories that go with that time/theme could also be used. Regards

Hi, I would just like to say that in my opinion the BBC's standards have gradually dropped over the last twenty years.
Reasons are in my opinion are down to who you employ, it seems you can have all the Knowledge in the world on a subject or topic but if you don't have a degree...
the BBC's disgraceful way of picking its presenters shows when it comes to the broadcasting, lets face it if you picks clowns to represent you, you deserve all thats coming to you,
certain presenters who work for Radio Stoke are very bias, I think you should listen to the founders opeinig words on Standards and Morals, it seem's to me you have let the Celebrities have to much time and let face it, they aren't the best of role models for our youth.
I want to say more about how your presenters seem to idolise people because they have got a big Celebrity NAME to them,

I find this message board very informative but I was wondering, is there any reason why the posts do not have a time or date on them as I find this would be of interest to all users?
by the way I also like radio Stoke.But last week on Wednesday in the snow I would of liked you to of kept broad casting after 7-00pm to keep us informed on all the road problems on our way home as I think it was a rather unusual evening

The reason we didn't continue to broadcast after 7pm is that the Jazz programme is shared with a number of other BBC local radio stations in the Midlands which weren't affected as badly by the snow. However you make a very good point and in future, should we be hot by such bad weather again, we will try to provide coverage of the problems later on into the evening.

The BBC have got it wrong
The BBC have got it wrong, again. My trust in you has been lost; you have joined the gutter press similar to The Sun and News of the World which I choose not to read. Sky News and ITV offer similar services but I prefer BBC News as I always believed it to be impartial. This would seem not to be the case. One act which would restore my faith in you would be for the journalist Gilligan to be removed from his job and all other journalists of a similar vain dismissed with him. It only takes one loose cannon to sink the ship! Get him out and I'll trust you again.
I would also like to mention that I was disgusted with the walk out at BBC Midlands last night which was publicised on BBC1 late news. In order for the matter to be 'put to bed' the fact that you got it wrong should be acknowledged by all concerned and you should get on with the job you do best. Please, no more silly walkout but DO get rid of Gilligan!

I would like to say how much I enjoyed your programme this morning.
We have refered to you as Radio Joke for a while now but Kevin Fernihow's suggestions to the Transport Manager from Stoke on Trent this morning were priceless!!! Snow ploughs and road closures being recommended to roads that are already blocked by stationary cars was unbelievable.
Keep these stupid suggestions coming Kevin, you make our mornings!!!

Having just listened to some coverage on the breakfast show I wish to complain about the hectoring and sarcastic tone of your comments in respect of the gritting that took place yesterday.
It's about time some credit was given to essential workers who risk abuse and criticism yet work very hard.
The so-called Stoke spirit and character - friendliness, warmth - does not seem to be in evidence when bricks and snow are thrown at people doing an honest job. Where is the condemnation of those, presumably local, people who have endangered the gritter drivers? Where is the gratitude for people working very long hours, often through the night? Why is it right to praise only the ambulance service for doing their job and not others?
I was in traffic for three and a half hours yesterday afternoon, from Hanley to Cobridge, and I saw many gritters. It's obvious they get stuck in the same traffic as anyone else. I thought Steve Tams showed great restraint in responding to your rather inept, and bullying, questioning this morning.
So come on, give some credit, be a responsible and honest radio station and accept that there are some things in life - like extreme weather co ditions - that we simply don't control and have to respond as best we can. I look forward to your response to this complaint. Yours sincerely

I am sorry you feel our coverage was inappropriate. The presenters were reflecting the tone and comments of scores of callers and one of our roles is to give people a voice. Indeed, we received much praise for tackling the issue in the way we did although of course our handling of the subject is not going to please everyone. why isn't the web more helpful?
I find it very unhelpful that you have the 1pm news feed on the web ....and that I can't tune into Radio Stoke over the internet. Also the travel news page - seems to be over 1hr behind !
I also looked at the Hanley webcam - great - it's actually upto date - perhaps having more webcams located around Hanley and other towns would be useful - certainly on an evening like this, rather than wasting (in my opinion) 3x webcams on Jodrell Bank and 2x on Radio Stoke's studios.

The BBC centrally is in negotiations to ensure all local radio stations can be streamed on their websites, but there are financial constraints and it will only be done if it is cost efficient and won't impact on the licence fee.
The travel news is supplied by an external contractor and we are working with them to ensure a more up to date service.
I'm sorry you feel the studio webcams are a waste because they receive many hits and are popular.
The BBC does not own the Jodrell Bank webcams, but only links to them.

Why do your listeners assume that teenage parents, particularly mothers, can not look after their children?
At Sure Start Blurton we have MANY teenage parents who are doing a cracking job...
Also - really irritated by the assumption that families living in poverty are dirty.
Stop generalising and recognise the families who are trying their best.

Here is a man with serious attitude!
It's really refreshing. He obviously comes up with the goods and is slightly quirky, which I like. I heard about him a year or so ago, and never believed he was one of us stokies!
Good on you Miles! His contribution is really good on Tim's show. It's so light hearted.
I do have one complaint though. Why is Miles only on once a month? Why not weekly? Is it because of his busy schedule, Radio Stoke? The new format for Radio Stoke is fab, by the way. It really works.

Many more mature listeners do not want to hear endless medical problems - they know about them, it is so depressing, you should be entertaining not depressing people! It is just a medical forum, WHY?
When"Plank" left and Kevin arrived things looked good. but now you have moved him to a ridiculous time.
What has happened to the excellent historical Barbara what's her name in the afternoons, this was good stuff.
sorry even my 89 year old mother puts the telly (sad) on now, you are losing it.
We used to have good interaction from your audience on tpoical local matters - notice how this has gone. Regards
