Pictures from Staffordshire's history - selected from the Staffordshire Past-Track Project
It was twenty years ago.... | |
| | | Miners' Strike, 1984 Staffordshire was the scene of much bitterness, on both sides, during the lengthy Miners' Strike of 1984. Unlike other parts of the country, miners were almost evenly split down the middle in their adherence to the strike. After a virtual complete walkout, miners drifted back to work and to join the rival UDM much to the anger of those who stayed out on the picket lines... and anger sometimes turned to violence. Arthur Scargill (above) was President of the National Union of Mineworkers and attended rallies and demonstrations throughout the country including this one above in North Staffordshire. This image is reproduced by kind permission of the North Staffordshire Miners' Wives Action Group. Part of the twentieth anniversary commemorations involves a special day-long event at the Potteries Museum
Staffordshire Past Track is a Lottery Funded project showcasing archive photos, artwork, maps, audio and film representing the county's history. The site is expanding all the time and there are already more than six thousand images and over an hour of archive film footage available on the website - www.staffspasttrack.org.uk. If you're interested in getting involved in the project and own photographs that you think would be of interest, or have local knowledge that you would be willing to share.
