Ever wondered what Burton-upon-Trent was like back in the olden days?
Well if you buy Rob Cox's new book The Burton upon Trent Fire Brigade you'll be transported back in time. The book outlines the role of the fire brigade throughout the ages, and the reader also gets a picture of the general history of Burton society as it developed through the ages.

Humble beginnings

The book starts by describing Burton Fire Brigade's humble beginnings of volunteer fire fighters and manual fire engines, and concludes with the brigade's jointure with Staffordshire in the more high-tech year of 1974.

Nostalgia
News imageThe book is filled with nostalgia. We can look back with amazement and compassion at the way our ancestors lived their lives.
And of course it's great to compare the old photos (Fire Station in the 1930s, right) with the same sites as they are in the town today.

Cox paints a picture with words as he describes the way in which people hitched a lift on the back of the manual fire engines as they made there way to the blaze. You can just see the poor so and so's clinging onto the side of the engine for dear life as it races to the fire at top speed.

Two World Wars
The book also gives a real sense of what it would have been like to live through both the First and Second World Wars.
Cox tells the moving tale of the German Zeppelin raid on Burton in World War One, in which the wife of one of the fire fighters was tragically killed.
There is also a intriguing account of Burton's efforts to combat blazing Birmingham and Coventry in the Blitz of World War 2.

If your interestedin local history then this book is a must.
