 | | How it started In 1002, a local nobleman, Wulfric Spot, bequeathed lands and money, so that a Benedictine Abbey could be set up to protect the shrine of St Modwen. The original Benedictine monks have been credited with discovering that brewing with Burton water produced superb strong beers.
Since that time the town has become the country’s capital of brewing and with Bass Brewers having played a significant part in the growth of the town, the Bass Museum, now owned by Coors Beers, was established in 1977 to celebrate the history of the company, the town and the industry as a whole. The Museum is leading the way in the celebrations of the millennium.
Royal Ales for 2002 As part of the year, The Queen and Prince Philip visited the Museum of Brewing on 3rd July and, in time honoured tradition, ‘mashed-in’ two new Royal brews - the Queen’s and Duke’s Ales - following in a long tradition of ales brewed by Royalty in Burton.
Both ales are now ready to be shipped to Buckingham Palace.
Beers by canal The royal ales will be transported aboard the traditional working narrow boatboat Ibex and will start their journey on Friday 20th September at Horninglow wharf, Burton upon Trent.
the 200-mile journey via the canal network to London culminates in the Royal Ales being delivered by the Coors Shire horse drawn dray down the Mall to the Palace on Friday 4 October.
Fun all the way The Ibex will visit several canal-side pubs where fundraising fun days will be held, with traditional indoor bar games from the Museum. The Royal Ales can be seen at the following locations: 20th Sept Horninglow Wharf , Burton upon Trent 21st Sept at Fradley Junction near Lichfield - 1950's Day with the Coors Shires and vintage vehicles. 25th Sept Braunston, nr Daventry - Northants. 29th Sept at Bulbourne, nr Tring, Herts. 4th Oct Ibex arrives at Camden Lock, London, and Coors Shire-horses delivers ales to Buckingham Palace.
